people need to condemn the deed, not the breed. pit bulls were originally bred to fight and yes they do have a tendency to be aggressive IF they are not properly trained & handled, and of course if the aggression is encouraged by idiot owners...you then have a very aggressive, very dangerous dog on your hands. I have a pit mix, and he is a total babydoll. i've had him since he was about 14 pounds. he's so gentle & loving that i'm even allowed to bring him to work with me (I bring him as well as my other dog, a border collie/lab mix). and yes, spaying/neutering is very important, as is choosing to rescue dogs from the SPCA or the Humane Society.

1. Many people label any dog that bites/attacks a "pitbull" because they do not know dog breeds.
2. Many people have not had their own experiences, just media accounts, which are slanted. Even stories about dog bites that do not involve a pitbull have the word "pitbull" in it somewhere.
3. News about lab and other dog breed bites don't make national news. "Pitbull" in a title of a story always causes a stir...
4. News about well mannered, loveable pitbulls are not shared.
5. Pitbulls are one of the most over-bred (thus, there are a high number of these breeds) and worst treated.
6. The higher the population, the "higher" the % of bites will be...like the higher the population in a city, the higher the crime....just makes sense.
7. Back yard breeders breed for "quantity" not "quality," and this is dangerous because they have no regard for sound temperment. A pitbull should not be human aggressive!!!
8. People like to be ignorant, be on a band wagon, and hate to take the time to research...Ignorance is bliss!
I love pitbulls. They are loving, loyal, obedient, and easy to train. They get an unfair reputation due to the few bad apples, and the misconceptions, and misrepresentations that occur.
People who feel that "pitbulls" are the only dangerous breeds, and hate and fear them, are just plain stupid. Labradors, shepherds, dalmations, mutts, all dogs can and will bite, and can harm/kill a person or another animal. By the way, some of the most dominant/aggressive dogs are toy breeds...people just don't fear them because they are small.
I share this website with those who hate/fear pitbulls...

When someone says this about your dog remind them about the little rascals TV show back in the day, he was a pit bull....
So many people get pets for the wrong reasons. We have many pits around here. This is due to there reputation of being mean and nasty. Not because they are smart and loyal.
My oldest teen had a friend over and his pit was not even on a leash. They all were out in our drive way and my teen let out of the gate, our puppy at the time which is a cow dog. The pit attacked, the owner did not no how to control his dog in the least! Our other working cow dog ran through the open gate and attacked the pit and was going to kill it. I pulled off our older cow dog (our property remember). The pit went for the pup again!
This kid had no business having this pit bull! The kid was even angry at our older cow dog for hurting his pit bull....I don't get that?
This same teenager of mine was bit by another pit bull in our town. He will have a scar forever. These owners are what give pit bulls a bad reputation....
On another note I owned a pitbull before I had a family. My father who was dieing loved that dog so when I moved out of his house he wanted me to leave the pit bull. I did and he loved that pit bull! She was with him at his side when my father died. She was very loyal to my father and when he died it was like she died inside too. My mother put the pit bull down without telling me, I was crushed when I found out!!
My mother said the dog went a little nuts without my father......

people would rather believe what they hear then take time to research something.no doubt there have been incidents of bad pits, but not all pits r bad, many of the so called maulings by"pitbulls"r not pits at all,but dogs that resemble pits.my wife, daughter and i own 2 pits, they r by far the most intelligent, gentle and affectionate dogs I've ever known.studies have shown that u r more likely to be bitten by a cockerspaniel or a lab then a pit,the reason being,a responsible owner knows their dog,and has spent alot of time socializing and spending time, playing and obedience training ,to learn their moods, and knows how to react to the situation.and yes the bad owners should be dealt with severely

Hey I have the same problem with people thinking my chow chow is mean, it's called breed discrimination. It sucks when you try to get house insurance or renters insurance. My daughter got bit in the face by a lab, and those dogs are supposed to be great dogs with kids. Also alot of it has to do with backyard breeding. People put dogs together because they are the same bread not reseaching the lines, so the quality of dogs go down. I think pit bulls are sweat. It is so sad that some people fight them, and then all of the dogs have to be put down.

Pitbulls have a Bad reputation because of the 'yellow talking heads' (news media) that most americans see as a real source of what is important in their world.
In US more people are injured or killed in hospital errors than dog bites. But that isn't 'news'worthy. Heck more people are kill by cars yearly than 10 (9/11)s. Which got more 'news' coverage?

THE MEDIA!!!!! they need to sell news stories and even though other breeds bite people and kill animals everyday it doesnt sound "exciting" to report that a poodle attacked a child causing scars that will never go away....I have done pitbull rescue for 6 years and my mom did it when I was growing up,we had dogs that had been fought and were close to death lick our faces as we picked their bloody, battered bodies up to help them...I will never forget the look of thanks and love they show!!!! this is a very loyal breed and will even show affection to the person that abuses them...please help fight BSL and save our beautiful pitbulls !!!!!

Guess people think pitbulls are mean ,because of their reputation. Some of this breed have been know to attack and kill human beings without any reason for the attack,so it can't be said that all are trained to do so by an owner. Many children along with adults have been attacked and killed by this breed and sometimes it is within the owner's family that such has occured, without any blame of being trained to attack.True many owners of this breed that train this breed to attack humans ,or other animals should be locked away, but many of this breed attack without being trained to do so.

I agree. "People who do that to these animals or other animals should be taken out back and be beaten to death:)." My aunt and uncle had a pitbull she wasn't mean at all. She was very loving. The kids would play with her and she even let them climb on her. Mean my A s s.. Its the person that makes them that way.

i honestly dont know why people think pitbulls r so mean, because i have 6 of them. wat i think it is, is that its not the dogs fault its the owner all my dogs r reall nice and gentle UNLESS they dont know who u r and they think ur a threat, but if they see u with the owner then they will think its okay and no harm will be done, but most pitbull owners use thier dogs for fights which i think is wrong because treating a dog like that will eventually result in them turnig on u. now ive had my dogs since they were pups and only one has ever snpped at someone and that was because me and my sister were sleeping and we were unable to protect ourselves so our dog sat or layed, which ever one u want to call it, in front of our door and watched very close. other than that one incident i dont know why people say stupid crap like that!
