The term "Whitlow" often refers to an infection of the finger skin, in the region of the nail, or the skin at the edge of the nail. Normally caused by the Herpes Simplex Virus.
Whitlow can also mean an infection in the pulp of the fingertip usually resulting from a prick or a small cut and often leading to abscess formation.
If in doubt see your doctor.
