It is the right thing to do unfortunately although "all day" is probably overkill. The puppy would hardly remember what it did after only a few minutes. As with children it is the parents responsiblity to teach right from wrong. But the good thing is yes, the puppy will probably like you more than your mom. Good Luck!

No it`s not right to hit a puppy. The world is full of aggresive kids because they are hit,a puppy learns just like a kid.You hit a puppy and over time the puppy will start having behavioral problems.Chewing on everything in sight. The puppy will just learn to chew when your mom is not looking. No puppy likes to be looked straight in the eyes and be told in a strict voice not to do something. It does have a better effect on them. The puppy being put in the bathroom as a timeout is the weirdest thing I ever heard.Confining a puppy to a small area can lead to behavioral problems too.Let us know if the puppy chewed on the toliet pipe that leads from the wall to the toliet. If so I will laugh.

Your mother has been misguided.
One never hits, specially a baby. Babies do not no the rules to the game yet.
This puppy will know who is boss real quickly if he/she has not already. Find a puppy class for you and your mother to go to.
As for who your puppy likes more will depend on who takes care of the puppy, who protects the puppy and who teaches the puppy.
Get the puppy out of isolation! This could ruin a puppy hence all the dogs in pounds these days.... If the puppy classes do not work it might be best for your mom not to have a puppy but a older dog who already knows house rules.....

People underestimate the intelligence and the memory of puppies. If you drag a puppy away from a pile of dog poop he wants to take a bite of I guarantee you three days later you can let him our and he will run three blocks through four yards and under 5 fences to get to that same pile of poop. People who think puppies have no long term memory are clueless. Ive seen them pee on things for spite, because they are angry. Perhaps the all day in the bathroom is a bit much But if you caught him doing something or pointed out something he did he WILL know why you are mad at him. Move the lamp cords. They are dangerous. Do not let him chew on these things, block his access to them or use a deterrant such as bitter apple spray. Gentle discipline is just as effective as harsh discipline. This does not mean smacking him doesnt work. It does work, it works well. Its mean and unnecessary.

You should never, ever hit a dog, no matter what!! It only makes them more aggressive because they think that you are fighting with them. If it is a big dog or a dog that is bred to be a guard dog, you could be putting yourself in danger.
It's OK to put a dog in time out, but only if they do something really dreadful. It should be done sparingly or the dog will get used to it. To put a dog in time out, you put it in an enclosed space (but NOT the bathroom-more like a pen outside or something) and leave it there for a whole day, immediately after the action that causes it to be put in time out. Otherwise it won't know why it's in time out. Leave the dog water, obviously, and feed it at it's normal feeding times. However avoid eye contact and don't speak to it. Make sure it doesn't have any toys. The next day pretend that nothing happened.
About your dog liking you more than your mom, dogs tend to develop a hierarchy system in the family. Depending on where you are in the system it may like you better. It's best to make sure the dog knows that it is the lowest on the tree and then it should like you all relatively equally.

First of all puppies aren't smart enough to know that there in the bathroom for time out..It is mean for your mom to do that. She should of spanked herself for leaveing something out for the dog to chew.Puppies are teething and they need alot of things to chew on.Like chew toys. She will only make the dog afraid of her by hitting it with her hand.As for the puppy likeing u better well is that all your concerned about...How about being concern that she has that poor pup locked up in the bathroom.

It is never good to strike a dog with your hand or any other part of your body. It is better to puppy proof a room much the same as you would not leave a crawling baby in a room with wires hanging out and wall sockets exposed.
The way I taught my dogs to have good manners and not chew on things they shouldn't is by kenneling them as pups when I could not watch them and for overnight for about a year. I made sure they went for walks each day and visited the dog park for exercise. One pup did chew a wall and was scolded, firmly. She did this sort of thing, on edges of furniture and scolding was repeated and I also got a spray that if they lick it puts a bad taste in their mouth. She outgrew the need. Also, I provide lots of chew toys so they can meet their chewing needs.

That's a totally ridiculous thing to do!!! The puppy is not a person and has no idea at all why he's in the bathroom. He is a dog - he can't associate being locked up with chewing a wire. Spanking him is only going to teach him to be afraid of her - not the way to train a puppy. And, if he wasn't caught in the act, he also has no way at all to associate the spanking with chewing the wire.

Not really. When an animal misbehaves, you need to correct the behavior by re-directing it, such as telling it no and throwing it a favorite chew toy. With our cats, we have a spray bottle. When they act up, they get sprayed. We are careful that they don't see the bottle, because if they knew where it was coming from, they would run from the bottle, but never correct the behavior. If she cannot re-direct it due to lack of patience, or unwillingness, yes, putting it in a confined room, as long as it is fed/watered/pottied regularly is fine. The next step though is obedience training - for the dog, you, and your mom.

It shouldnt' be confined to the bathroom all day. It's a puppy, it has no idea why it's being isolated from its family. It can't make the connection. The spanking was probably more than enough.
