We have a young Portugese water dog that is not neutered and has started 'marking' around the house. We cannot have him neutered anytime soon due to a contract (long story). In the meantime how can we train him not to mark his territory inside? He's a good dog other than that. (Oh, and NO! and punishment doesn't seem to work with this breed.)

I should mention that he does not like to be alone. He will go out on a line for only a short time before howling. We have a standard poodle also that is neutered and they keep each other company.

How old is this dog? If he's just reaching sexual maturity, that's probably why he's marking. You need to first of all make sure you get out all the smells or he'll just keep going back there. Then, while you're re-training, he needs to be confined to a crate or exercise pen at night and when you're gone. Then you just need to keep an eye on him, you probably know all his spots and signals by now. Tell him no very firmly, clap your hands to startle him, or squirt him with a water bottle. If you're consistent, he should soon get out of the habit. I've had multiple intact males in my house and the only time any of them ever even thought about it was if there was a female in heat around - most males don't mark in the house.

Okay, if he's fairly young than great, still time to learn. Soon as he pees you grab him by the collar and rub his nose in it and spank him hard enough and sternly tell him "NO!" You have to do this couple times before he learns. He has to be taught when he needs to go he is supposed to go outside.
But if you're a softie, and can't imagine chastizing your dog to train him than don't do it. But that is my answer. I have known forever that when a dog does something wrong, you show him, spank him and say no and it always works.......of course if you do it more than once

Go out and purchase what's referred to as a stomach band. It is going across the puppy and you set a pad in it to preserve the entire urine. I myself have four Shi Tzu's and all four of them ought to put on stomach bands. two of them are dog mill rescues however such as you my different two style of un-knowledgeable themselves. Hope this helped,
