Sleep is associated with memory consolidation. We actually need sleep in order to reflect what was learned during the day and code the learning into long term memory. So in a way, it is not a total waste.
There has been a recent study in Science talks about socially active members of the community need more sleep. And the theory was sleep was needed to learn from the interactions and experiences throughout the day.
Some people can get away with less sleep, which is just not fair. I wish I could... But I need 9 hours per night to function normally.

Best thing I know I can do that is not wasting time is actually sleep. Whilst you are sleeping your whole body every single part of it is healing, repairing, rejunivating it self for the next day. Without sleep yo would suffer not only pysically but also mentally.

For pampering, you could always wear a deep conditioning hair mask while you sleep (be sure to wear a shower cap!),inch loss by putting a mud mask on problem areas and wrapping it in cling film. Then there's the self help tapes that play as you sleep-to stop smoking, lose weight, learn new languages,etc..
Just plain snoozing is my favourite thing though!

Lucid dreaming might be the answer for you. Becoming lucid in a dream allows you to control the dream. You can use the dream time creatively.
Try 'Lucid Dreams in 30 Days' by Harary and Weintraub. (ISBN = 185538003x)
Or you could try self-hypnosis. This isn't really something to do when sleeping, but short bouts of trance relaxation will reduce your need to sleep yet still refresh you.

Start the laundry and the dishwasher before you go to bed...I know that doesn't take up the full amount of time you sleep, but at least it isn't all wasted time.

The best thing to do is just sleep.
Nowadays we are so preoccupied with multitasking (eating while watching TV, chatting on the phone while driving) that we do not enjoy the simplest things that matter the most.
I simply prefer to rest my head on my lover's arm and drown in the silkiness on my sheets and my dreams.

Dream I suppose. Anyway I don't think sleep is a waste at all - this is when our body repairs itself. I love sleeping personally - it's my favourite hobby.

Well if you wake up with a smile on your face you must have enjoyed it, so who cares what you were doing in your sleep to cause it?
