There are no real reasons why not, but I'll bet a lot of religious people would much prefer a religious leader. It seems to be necessary to be a Christian to get to be President, but there is no reason why an Atheist shouldn't be.

There is no reason why they SHOULDN'T other than all the money it costs to run a campaign. I personally would like to see someone in the White House that understands the separation between church and state. However, I don't believe they would win.

On the other hand, maybe the christians aren't a majority. Maybe they are just a very vocal minority. If an atheist wants to run and has a strong platform, GO FOR IT!!

There is absolutely no reason why an atheist shouldn't run for president, lets face it Bush has managed to kill more americans through his leadership than any leader for years in USA.
A leader is not determined through his beliefs other than the right of all man. Lincoln did not set the standard for equality for it to be torn down in a different way years later!
The problem is if it is only christians I ask you, which sect, Catholic, Armish, Baptist, Brethern.. bla bla bla because they all tend to think they are the only ones. What happens to the Buddists who believe in peace, or do you want to be lead by those good christians that will kill for their beliefs?

There are laws in some states that Atheists can't run for any office. You usually have to be a known politician to run for president, and you may not get that far anyway because people are biased and are brainwashed to not like Atheists.

they are somewhat 2d now to Scientologists. And no. i might want to in no way vote for an Atheist for something. i might want to decide on a rock over an Atheist. possibly the cat that has been mayor in Alaska for 15 years. yet no longer an Atheist.

Because of those who said No to your previous question, unless he remained a closet atheist, or cynically announced a conversion or something. People accept and even expect illogical and irrational people of faith in office instead of pragmatic realists. Most illogical. !?

I agree with Mav - anyone who actually WANTS the job is probably not the right person FOR it. See G.W. Bush. He wanted it so badly he lied to the evangelicals, his brother fixed the voting in florida to discount black votes....many other nasty things.

Anyone can run for president. I just may run for president! Or I'll submit my dog's name as a write-in, for president. So, go ahead, let the atheist run for president.

Actually, IT might be a nice change to have someone not claim to know the will of God in office.

I think God could work wonders through their ignorance.

*the word ignorance is not an insult it just means that someone does not know something.
