What's wrong with walking? The kids are bunched up in a stroller and almost as big as the parent. They look like 5-7 years old. That's wierd to me, and maybe one reason why kids are getting bigger and bigger...lack of exercise. I have a 3yr old. If we go to the mall, we may walk around for 2 hrs to shop, but she walks.

I see a lot of snappish responses here. Funny...all those kids do not have medical issues! And Marie K: I am not ignorant. I am not talking about a child with cerebral palsy or any other disability! I do not make my child walk until she is tired. Walking is EXERCISE, or did some of you forget?!?!? And I've never lost her in a mall. No shopping is more important than my child's safety! If I want to shop ALL DAY I do it while she is in school. Two hours of walking shouldn't be a big deal for a healthy kid, and my daughter is still hopping with energy when I put her in the car.

My daughter is one of those bigger kids you might see in a stroller someday. Stop being so ignorant and remember that most of the time that you see this; there probably IS a medical condition you don't know about. My daughter has Cerebral Palsy and isn't able to make long distances. I'm glad you have a child that won't be needing a stroller for such a reason, but hopefully you'll teach your child that it's ok for people to get around anyway they see fit to their ability.

Edited to add: I'm sorry for thinking you were ignorant. I guess I just took offense too quickly since I'm used to people forgetting that not all disabilties can be seen. Obviously you are not one of those people, and I do apologize. Unfortunately though, there are more people than not who do think this way and forget that just b/c a person/child doesn't "look" disabled doesn't mean they aren't. I didn't mean to be mean to you.

You are right; if a child is capable of walking; there's no reason to have them in a stroller constantly. It's not healthy for them.

While they may look like they're 5 to 7, I doubt it unless they have special needs. Some young kids are very tall and mature looking and some are very small and still keep their baby features longer. You mention that you have a 3 year old - do you have any other children?

When my older 3 were 1, 5 and 6 and we were going to the mall or other places, at times I would put all 3 in the stroller. This was especially if I needed to duck in and out and not spend half the time looking for one of the kids that would be tempted to wander off. Most of the time they would walk because they would be embarrassed to be seen in a stroller. But with my 4th, an autistic kid, I kept him in a stroller and put him in carts whenever possible because he will wrench away from me and get lost in a crowd fast. He doesn't understand that he needs to stay with me so he spent the most time in strollers or carts.

As far as physically fit, all my kids are slender and fit and get plenty of exercise. The mall is not a place where I want them all power walking / running in 4 different directions so that they can get their exercise.

My daughter is 5 and we walk around the mall all the time. I bring her stroller for when she gets tired. if she does not use it then I use it to put my bags on . There is nothing wrong with her using the stroller. Why try to lug around a 5 yr old that is tired and I still have errands to run. She gets plenty of exercise (she is tiny and not overweight) runs around the playground all the time and runs around with our two dogs. Also there may be medical reasons why some larger kids are in strollers. You never know if someone has a medical condition that is not very noticable.
Oh, if we are not asking you to push the stroller, why does it bother you at all?

There's nothing wrong with walking. I have a 15 month old and a 3 year old (just turned three in September). My three year old is into everything if I let her walk around with me. She doesn't listen as well to me when we're out either and I'm afraid something will happen to her. I'm actually going to go buy a double stroller sometime this week. But when they get to be closing in on 4 I think they should be old enough to understand to stay by you and not run off. I plan on the double stroller mainly for the airport. In order to make connecting flights, we need to walk fast.

There is absolutely no reason for a healthy 5-7 year old to be in a stroller for a normal shopping trip. My daughter is 3 and she always walks on normal trips. Now if we went to Disney world or something similar I would probably bring the stroller. She probably would not use it but I would bring it in case she got tired.

I don't understand why an older child would need to be in a stroller either. One reason could be that the kid is in control, and the parent had to give in in order to get what they need done.

It is the mall....it is not like these people have been walking for days. Make your able body children get up off their buns and walk!

I have a 4-year-old daughter. Yesterday we went on a family hike and she actually walked about 2 miles on her own. So sure, she CAN walk around.

But if I'm just trying to get in and out of the mall with a minimum amount of fuss, that stroller might be tempting because it's faster. Sure, she can walk distances, but her legs are only half as long as mine.

That said, we've pretty much given up on the stroller for her because she's just too tall for it.

Maybe the children you're seeing aren't as old as you think they are? My 18 month old, Is big for his age, And people are always giving us snotty looks because he still uses a bottle....Or because we're carrying him instead of making him walk!

Besides that, Say the children ARE between 5 and 7 years old...What does it matter to you if they're in a stroller? At least they're not wandering around the store, Bumping into you, Or making a mess of the aisles??!

I would much rather see a child of that age, sitting in a stroller, Being good, as opposed to one causing havoc in a store!

Mabye because 5-7 year olds are lazy and dont want to walk. But yes it weird. My 7 year old is WAY lazy. That is Cody. Then Diana is 4 and Chelsie, 2. And the parents that give in to there children with guilt. My parents made me get out of the stroller by 2 years.

1. It's safer for them to be in a stroller then walking around in a crowded place.
2. It's takes alot more energy for a 3 yr. old to walk around the mall for 2 hours than it does an adult.
3. It keeps them occupied. When you're walking, you're walking. But when you're riding in a stroller you can be occupied with toys/food or sleep if you're out and about during that time of day when they need a nap.
4. Most have baskets underneath which are great for putting your purchases after buying them while shopping.

But yes, I agree 6 & 7 yr. olds should not be in a stroller. That is a bit much.
