Mary is a general protector. I don't think she is actually a Saint. Mary is the intercessor between hummanity and God. People pray to her for forgiveness of sins because of her relationship with God both as Father and as Son.

Traditionally she is the Queen of Heven, and can intercede for people in Purgatory, especially unbaptized babies. She takes care of hummanity in general, no one in specific.
