Yes there are many programs for Genealogy. They are really important to keep track of your data and research, because you can get a lot. My friends use a variety of these packages, the most important feature is that they produce a GEDCOM file, so you can read GEDCOM files from other people (or contribute).

One of these is free, and another site does software comparisons. Good luck.

The beta version is pretty good, there is a free trial, and a free version, but if you are going to really pursue this the paid program is a good idea.
