Yes you have every right to do that it is a hard time to go through and you are commemorating your partners father. If a partner of mine did that I would be grateful because it is showing him that you have respect and honor. I would do it without any thought. Go for it! They will be very pleased for this gratitude.

Yes, It is a sign of respect is to close the business the day of the funeral, more if you like. Hanging a black wreath is also a sign of respect. You could put a note on the door, or in a window, notifying the public of the loss. "This office will be closed October 24th, in memory of John Doe, Attorney at Law." Don't put the details of his loss. You could include the particulars of the visitation, if you wish. "Friends who wish to pay respects may do so at the Peace Funeral home, 2pm to 8pm this Saturday."
A black wreath shouldn't be difficult, buy a grape vine wreath, and stick a some nice black flowers in it, and buy a black bow. Your local craft store has what you need, and there might be someone there to help you choose what you need.. There are usually pre- made bows available if you do not have crafting skills. Other suggestion is to buy a styrofoam wreath, wrap it in black ribon, use a glue gun, and glue the flowers and a bow on it. They sell things to hang it with, too. There might be a pre-made one available, or contact your local florist, some work with artificial flowers as well as real these days.
Sorry for your loss, hope this helps.

don't know if you mean closing permanently or not but i see nothing wrong with hanging a wreath; it's your sentimental situation and you can deal with it how you want. if you mean to put some kind of indication on the door of the business, just a sign or black ribbon is ok too. sorry for your loss.

Usually the business is closed at least for the day of the funeral, or for more days if you decide. Post a notice on the door, and/or put an ad in the paper.

I feel this would be very appropriate, as a sign of your respect for your partner and his family. Would you see a similar sign of respect as welcome should the roles be reversed? If so, definitely do it.
