Why does ph sound "f" in words when sh, ch, th, and gh sound like the first letter with a slight "uh"?

That is just one of the strange rules of the English language! They say English is the toughest to learn because of this crazy logic.

Now that my seven year old is learning all of this stuff and I am looking at it from a different point of view - a lot of it really makes no sense!

its just how the rules of the english language go. very confusing right?
