It's a reference to cooking something with a small, medium hot pepper called a pepperoncini. Kind of like a banana pepper. You get them in the box with a Papa John's pizza and sometimes in a Greek Salad. Used in Italian cooking.

A peperoncino is an Italian pepper. Can be spicy, sweet, or extra spicy!

"Fresh or dried, peperoncino peppers can add character to a variety of dishes, soups, pickled items, sauces and marinades. When dried, the spice keeps for long periods of time. It can be preserved whole, finely chopped, ground, or placed in a jar and then covered with oil. In Italy, the peppers are often threaded on a string by their stalks, and hung."
