this would depend on the severity of damage to the brain.
the function of the brain is multi-dimensional and what areas of it are directly changed/damaged by any missile affects the whole function of it. however ...
a person with a damaged brain by a missile will more or less be able to respond (express) to life forces/ideas and relationships by the feeling facility which relys on much less complicated mental functioning.....responds to the simple in life.
people who have an affected brain apparatus are not dead nor are they retarded. (retarded is a word far too commonly applied to deemed abnormal mental functioning)(retardation means a slowing of a conceived normal brain functioning and ideas processing.) but slowing of the processing of ideas is normal for all people since personal and social conditions change for a human person to recognize.
yes....a person with a damaged brain can "snap back into being normal again in years" but it would require a subsiding of the conditions which make "normal" abnormal.
all things are possible ... when the conditions are realized to know possibility.
good question.....be well

No, that is not a true story. However, whenever someone suffers an injury to their head/brain many things can go wrong and those things can't always be fixed. Much depends on what type of injury occurred. Also, I wonder if you're asking about "post traumatic stress syndrome?" Many people who experience the pain and stress of war have a hard time feeling normal once they're back home again (nightmares, fear of loud noises, lack of sleep, sadness...). These feelings run deep, but can be helped.
By the way, why are you asking this question?

Gunshot wounds to the head usually result in hemorrhagic stroke and brain trauma (injury) with varying degrees of damage depending on the severity of the hemorrhage. This does not result in mental retardation. Where did you get that idea? Brain damage is, for the most part, irreversible. Mental retardation is also irreversible.
FYI: I disagree with the person who stated that if someone got shot in the head, they wouldn't be returning. Not true. I have patients who have survived GSW to the head.

In the first place if a person got shot in the head, he/she would not be returning. But, yes if counseled right a person can return to fairly normal. It may take time but it can be done.

Depends entirely on what part of the brain receives the damage.

If the brain is damaged, it is unusual for it to get better.
