How? You mean why? Because it is in the smile it mystifies people and the subject herself. Some works of art are just great and should not need explaining.

Mona Lisa, or La Gioconda (La Joconde), is a 16th-century oil painting on poplar wood by Leonardo da Vinci, and is arguably the most famous painting in the world. Few works of art have been subject to as much scrutiny, study, mythologizing and parody. It is owned by the French government and hangs in the Musée du Louvre in Paris.

The painting, a half-length portrait, depicts a woman whose gaze meets the viewer's with an expression often described as enigmatic.

By the way the mona lisa has her hand over her stomach in the painting, because at the time she was pregnant with Leonardo thats why he wanted to paint her, because they LOVED each other and he wanted to remember it forever.

I have no clue, except that it was painted by a great genius. Da Vinci was an incredible man that did a lot more that paint that portrait. However, one of the responses stated that "some works of art are just great and don't need explaining...". LOL!
I guess us dunderheads that weren't born with the "ah-ha, that's a brilliant piece of art!" gene will have to suffer - or are you stating the explanation itself would be over our heads?

France merely appreciates stable artwork. There are dozens and dozens of articles and essays with reference to the Mona Lisa. (merely google it) in my view I prefer to no longer dissect artwork that lots. The greater one tries to quantify and objectify it, the less one is in touch interior the imaginative adventure. (ie - 'artwork' isn't the object yet extremely the adventure of interacting with the object on your own words)
