It's when an inanimate object or conciet is made to seem human, usually through the use of language and the use of words that are associated with living things. It's mainly used to refer to poetry/literature etc. Like "The earth breathed and sighed". That's not a dictionary definition, just what I would say.

For things like this dictionary.com is better than yahoo answers. But cheers for allowing me two points.
