I wonder why there were so many answers that said it was a rule in every Muslim country that all women had to wear headscarf. They even continued to post this answer after there were already several answers of people who told from their personal experience that it is not so. So where from do these people get this idea that in all Muslim countries all women had to wear scarf or even veil or otherwise would be punished? Why do people insist on prejudices that can so easlily be proven false?

That is an easy one - from the media. We catches snatches of stories here and there and we think we know the answers. Once people think they know the answers they just stop thinking about it often times - that task is done, move onto another. Fortunately there are people like you who help perpetuate the truth and eventually it will seep in.

Peace!

The difference is, a woman wearing a veil does not offend or disrespect our culture. Loads of British women wear scarves too. It's really a one-sided thing. There's nothing ingrained in our societal rules as to why British women dress the way we do, it's not an emotive topic like it is for them. In fact, the way we dress, anything goes- there's no rules. Therefore there's no reason to worry about people who carry on their own way of dressing when they come here (unless their way was butt-naked which is one thing we don't allow in public) because their way of dressing does not clash with ours. When a clash is presented, then obviously the country's own rules would always win out. But in this instance there is no clash because we have no rules when it comes to women's clothing!! Whereas the other way round, when we visit their country, there is one. Besides, how could we not allow it? If we banned veils and scarves, then British women would have to give up decorative headscarves as well and it would all be really ridiculous and hostile, because we wouldn't have done it for any "real" reasons, only playground logic.

Because people don't like to accept anything that disagrees with their preconceptions. It does remain true that in MANY places where the majority of people follow the Islamic faith, women have to cover themselves according to the local custom or be seen as infidels. Even though some places are more tolerant than others, women are still physically attacked in some parts of the world because of clothing choices. Saying that it NEVER happens is more dangerous than saying the truth: that it SOMETIMES happens. It is probably just as dangerous to say that it ALWAYS happens, but in my understanding, it is better to err on the side of caution.
But it is still always better to know what you are talking about before you speak. I'm glad you spoke and I'm glad I answered.

It is a stereotype not predjudice. Why do people think Americans are selfish and mean. Beacuse that is what we are told. We always see people of muslim religion with head scarfs, we hear about the punishments that occur if the women do not. Even the women here in the US still wear them, so we are led to believe that. I knew that not all were required to wear them, but that most still chose to.

In the Quran it tells women we must cover our selves. Now as to what you hear and what happens is from the media. However, in some countries there might be this law. But it’s not a law from Islam because in Islam there is no compulsion. We Muslim believe in free will so no one can oppress us in to wearing or not wearing the hijab. I myself wear hijab and I am in America. I wear it because Allah has asked me too not because man thinks they have a right to overrule what’s told in the Quran. This also goes for France and the UK where so much controversy about Hijab and veil.

Because they've been listening to too much Michael Savage and Sean Hannity who do nothing more then lie for three hours a day and go on and on about how evil muslims are. These people have been brainwashed.

It's because of the media frenzy to point fingers at people who are "different" so that we will fear them, and encourage the war. It's political, and it's ridiculous.

Most people actually believe that it's a requirement for Islam, when in fact, it's an Arabic tradition that doesn't have anything to do with religion.

Because they like to stick with prejudices. That help them slander Islam in many ways.

Because if enough people tell them it's true, some people just mindlessly agree.

It's pathetic, really.
