Ok, so I just asked a question about the meaning of life. Very interesting answer's. But one of them struck me in particular. Whoever they were they obvioulsy believed in God and Jesus, saying that the whole point of life is to serve God etc etc. But they also said that this life is nothing compared to the eternity in heaven you will receive if you believe in God and follow his teaching...

So here's my counterstrike to that. Does anyone else not think that the only reason religion still exists is because we are too afraid to accept that this really is JUST IT! No second life, no eternity. It's open your eyes your born, close your eyes you die. The stuff in between if just it.

Sounds horrific? Not really, don't you think that if we all truley believed that we might actually try and make this life and this world a better place instead of saying 'oh well doesn't matter, I've got heaven to look forward to?'

I agree. Believing in "God" and life everlasting is a physiological need, a crutch if you will.

I'd say religion's still around for a lot more reasons than just wanting certainty about where you go after you die. But I've wondered about that too--what's the point of trying if you know you've got heaven to look forward to? I grew up in an evangelical Christian home (I've left that belief system since then), and that was one thing that frustrated me about the whole system: couldn't you go around killing people and everything, then still get into heaven just because you were "saved" by Jesus? The whole concept also makes dying this sort of unnaturally glorious thing, like we're supposed to want to die. Come on, who, in their gut, wants to die? Do you really want to be burned at the stake, or shot at Columbine for saying you believed in Jesus? Because I was told that I should be excited about that prospect.

Now, I really just concentrate on the right-now, on enjoying life as I have it. Because that's what we really have, anyway.

Yeah here is my counter strike, why are the majority of the people in this world trying to give themselves hope in an everlasting life? I would have to say you are the minority right now, How are they so wrong for trying to do that. U dont know if theres a god: they havent died and seen god or heaven, yet they give themselves hope and help to make themselves and this world a better place(in their cultures eyes) and try to give themselves a certain peace inside that u wouldnt have any idea about. Now dont get me wrong they can get kinda ridiculous and can contradict themselves alot but its there souls insurance policy as well as so much more.

If this life is IT and there is no God, well, at least I spent my life trying to do the right thing and if there is no heaven or hell waiting for me when I die, well, I guess I'll be too busy being dead to notice.

I think the god belief is one I can not explain. I have tried. It seems to be a psychological need.
