One cup of flour equals four ounces. With 16 ounces in one pound, you'll have four cups in one pound, or 20 cups in a five-pound bag.

However, the only way you'll get that many cups out of a five-pound bag is to measure flour correctly. To correctly measure flour, use a spoon to lightly scoop flour out of its container into a measuring cup. Continue until the cup is overflowing. Then use the back side of a knife to level off the flour even with the top edge of the measuring cup.

I actually measured by hand 16.66 cups for 5 lbs of flour. First I sifted the entire bag in a bowl and then I measured by each cup brushing off the cup each time with a knife. This yielded the most precise measure for me and seems to correspond accurately with some other sites. Calculations are great, but verification gives me more confidence. The bag of flour I used is from Kroger and is unbleached all purpose enriched flour.

That depends on how you measure. Are you measuring sifted or presifted?

I did the math on this very subject not long ago - it came out to about 25 cents a loaf for plain bread. Add a few cents if you are making it with oatmeal or raisins. There is no comparison to the overpriced, overprocessed store bought breads.

Easier way to figure it is how many loaves can you make from a 5 lb bag? If that's too hard, you know you can make at least 5 loaves. Divide the price by five. Since a 5 lb bag of flour is usually around a $1.00, that adds 20 cents to the cost of the bread.

Approximately 9 cups.

one cup = 8 oz
one pound = 16 oz

In a 5-pound bag there are 80 oz of flour. (5 pounds x 16 oz)
Therefore you should get about 10 cups of flour per bag. (80 oz divided by 8 oz)

Good luck! I've been thinking about trying homemade bread myself.
