What do you think of the latest ruling by the Southern Baptist Convention to bar missionaries and employees that pray in a private prayer language?

This isn't new, and the SBC, doesn't believe in speaking in tongues, or any prayer language, as far as I know. They just had a new ruling at the seminary in Fort Worth Tx.

Debra, I am a part of the (or was) SBC and my husband is ordained through them. We left because of the beliefs shared about the gifts of the spirit, and the teachings about women. I pray and struggle for the Christians that we know in the church today.

In the home and-or in any "private" situation ones converstation with God id between God and the individual... no ones business what or how this is done..... in a congrigation prayer practices are, to some extent, dictated by the doctrun of the particular congrigation.. It one can not abide by thoe doctrins and practices then one should find an other church home... as much as I disagree with some Southern Baptist ways...they have that perogative to make such decrees for their services....

I'm not Southern Baptist, and I pray in whatever language I can or am led to pray in....private or not. But the Southern Baptist Convention has to do what they believe is right. We should all pray for each other, regardless of our denomination or whether we're Catholic or not. The Father is at the heart of our faith, with Jesus as our connection to Him. IMO, unless you are part of the SBConvention, the criticism should be kept to a minimum, and prayer to a maximum. Encourage those who you know who may be struggling with this issue, but tearing each other down is rarely helpful. Just my opinion.
Hoping the best for you...

This is news to me, (it's dated Dec. 2005), I was raised a Southern Baptist and we NEVER believed in speaking in tongues, it was something the disciples did while Jesus was on earth at the Passover, the Holy Spirit blessed the disciples with the ability to talk where they could go out and preach about Jesus and every one there would hear in their own language.

This must be something new because I've never heard of it.
Speaking in unknown tongues has been in Southern Baptist Churches for decades if that is what you're referring to.

Well, when Aunt Colleen comes to the house, she sometimes forgets her meds. If she says grace at the table, it might as wel be a private language. But all of us act like we understand because Aunt C is kind woman. And we wouldn't bar anyone because we don't drink.

You're talking about "speaking in tongues".
I think barring this, while hypocritical to the bible they claim they believe, shows a rare bit of common sense on the part of the SBC.

I don't quite understand - have they barred all of their employees from praying in a foreign language? That can't be what you mean...

They are following mans laws instead of Gods. It looks like something that would happen toward the end times, what do you think?
