Try the following

France

1)Poitier - has the oldest church in France and is a smaller but charming town. Great historical significance to France as scene of a large battle in medevil times.

2) The Perigord - This region of France has castles and historic towns scattered about from the early 10 th century through the eighteenth century some with tours and museums of excellent quality. It also was the seat fo the 100 year war with all the history behind this, The region is also the craddle of civilization for europe with preserved sites and cave paintings 10,000 years old with neanderthal heritage. Natural caves exist as well for exploration with stalagmites and stalagtites and all sorts of wonderful growths and shapes. Really too much to list in a note...get a castle guide to France and books on the Perigord region, lok up UNESCO world heritage sites....at least two in the Perigord.

Germany - The Rhine and their castles. Nurenberg and other ancient/medevil towns. Bremen haven and hamburg are quite nice and have old sections of historical interest. Germany is a big place so lots to discover and find, focus on the states/regions and get to this level of detail to isolate the areas you want to visit.
