I'm just interrested, I saw a documentary by national geographic, and read an article in popular mechanics, Both did not to explain anything, that I could understand, I'm a bit of a stickler for facts and figures so I'm looking for research papers. There must be some out there, I'm trying to persuade my inquisitive nephew it was not controlled explosions.

When I said don't understand, I meant that the information I have seen is presented as a scattering of facts, conjecture, and suggestions in no way "joined up" enough to fully support the hypothesis. I will keep looking, and thank you for the links suggested. Incidentally my nephew is 30 years old and has a Masters degree in chemistry and although often papers are (intentionally) inscrutable it doesn't harm having a look.
