I have a New American Bible, Personal Study Edition.

This is the Bible from which all Mass readings in the US are taken. So it helps when you pre-read the Mass readings or go back later.

Amazon sells a hardcover for about $35: http://www.amazon.com/Catholic-Bible-Personal-Study-American/dp/0195284194/ref=ed_oe_h/104-9746504-1531951?ie=UTF8

With love in Christ.

---Is Catholic---

The NIV and KJV study bibles are not appropriate to use for Catholics. As Vatican II Dei Veribum teaches, it is necessary to read the scriptures within the same Spirit as they were written. This Spirit is the same Spirit that vivifies the Catholic Church, keeps her from error, and is the Holy Spirit. The footnotes and commentary in non Catholic bibles are not written within the same spirit (as the writers are not in tune with the Catholic Church they lack being in tune with the Holy Spirit) as the scriptures were written and thus the exegesis / commentary is flawed or simply wrong in places.

There are several good study bibles out there for Catholic. I would suggest anything that comes out of Ignatius Press. They publish several different study bibles for different ages. The are typically single bible vols. such as the "CATHOLIC STUDY BIBLE"

I also suggest the Navarre Bible series, which comes in each book deeply spiritually analyzed extensively. However, this is not found within a single volume but several and for all the books is several hundred dollars. I would suggest though, buying the READERS EDITION: Gospels - Acts which runs about $30.

There is also the Haydock Bible which is $100 and is a collection of commentary from the Church Fathers.

The New Jersusalem version comes with useful footnotes and guidelines, but these might be good if you want some privacy for reflection and prayer. However Bible studies are more profitable if done in a group setting so that you can interact with others. I hope your local parish have something in place.
BYW, I'm not a Catholic but the New Jerusalem is the best version.

The New International Version (NIV) is written in plane English, very easy to understand. My husband has a King James version, with all of the thous and thees and strange words, I can't understand his, but I have the NIV devotional bible (study bible) and understand it perfectly.
