SPLIT HAIRS - "Argue extensively over trifles or fine distinctions; quibble. A hair can be split today without much trouble, but once it was thought to be so fine that an effort to split it would be a waste of time. The same was true of trifling points, and the analogy between the one and the other was made long ago.
split hairs...
to argue about whether details that are not important are exactly correct. 'She earns three time what I earn.' 'Actually, it's more like two and a half.' 'Oh stop splitting hairs!'

To split a hair is doing something so fine that it does not really need doing i.e why would you not just take the whole hair rather than split it. This is then applied as an allergy to an actual situation. For instance if you offered to sell something for £100 and the buyer offered you £99.99p that would be like splitting hair

If identical twins do share a soul that would explain A Lot about the identical twins I have known. But...... life could begin at conception and the soul could still be inserted at a later time. When? I don't know... Just a theory.

Basically means little or no difference. Imagine splitting a hair in two, what difference would there be between the two pieces, almost none.

'Splitting hairs' is something a picky person will do during an argument. If you win a point, they will then 'split the hair' meaning split that particular point down in the hope that they can win ... I think.

it means the difference between two points of view is as thin as a hair. to differentiate would be like splitting the hair. and just as pointless and difficult

If people split hairs, they concentrate on tiny and unimportant details to find fault with something.

Split hairs = be (over) fastidious / argue over trifles
eg: "You think it happened last June and i think it was July; let's not split hairs and say it was sometime last summer".

It means being nitpicky or not focusing upon the big picture, but rather, on small and insignificant details and minutae.
