If you want to spend less try Raleigh, Falcon, Ridgeback, they offer a wide range in the sub £200 bracket. Checkout www.evanscycles.com very good store but try locally often they will match Internet prices and may even offer a free 1st service.

Being in the U.S., most people would probably suggest you get a Trek or perhaps a Diamondback. Both of these (at the price you are seeking) are made in the same factory but the Diamondback will be a little better equipped and a little less expensive to meet your £200 ($350) price point.

In GB, I would likely look at a Dawes first, and then a Raleigh (who, in the U.S., is the same as Diamondback). If you really want to compare, which I suggest you do, make your way to Manchester (Leeds, near the Bramley Station) to Bob Jackson Cycles for a truly professional opinion. It may exceed your budget but it will be well worth the cost.

When looking at a hybrid, try not to pigeonhole yourself into purchasing a womens "drop frame" bike. These were originally introduced so that women could wear dresses and not have to lift their leg over the top tube. However, these frames tend to be weaker and heavier than their "mens" counterparts.

Of course, if you are planning to wear a dress when you ride or if you feel a little strange lifting your leg to mount a bike then a "mixte" frame would be the way to go, but they are difficult to find.

I have a Giant. I love it. I've had it for several years -- absolutely no problems yet -- but I put a lot of miles on it, and I found it useful to purchase a different seat.

Additionally -- the hybrids usually are a little heavier -- so you may find yourself a little slower than a street bike -- but it will make you stronger, and eventually you will be faster. I love the hybrid for trail biking! good luck!

I have a Trek 7100 women's bike, which I love, which runs about $300 USD (so about £150). I agree with the other poster who said it is heavy, but that just gives you a better workout. If you're just riding it on the street, I'd recommend you don't get "knobby" tires on it, but rather have slick tires, such as the Bontrager Select Invert or the Precision slick tires.

Have fun!!

If your going to be using this bike on a regular basis its got to be one of the Trek Navigator series. Excellent bikes. Get one in the autumn sales and you'll get more bike for your money.
http://www.trekbike.co.uk will give you local dealers.

You could also try local police auctions or the small ads - never know you may be lucky. http://www.government-auctions.co.uk

Most importantly though, make sure you get the right frame size for you.

Enjoy!
