Edward Jenner noticed that milkmaids who had had cowpox did not catch small pox. He tried giving a young boy cowpox then exposing him to smallpox. It worked the boy did not get sick, so vaccinations were discovered. They actually got their name from Vaccinia the name for cow pox.The date was 1796.

Edward Jenner... He invented the first vaccine, which was against smallpox.. He is famous as the first doctor to introduce and study the smallpox vaccine. Mr Jenner contributed papers on angina pectoris, ophthalmia and valvular disease of the heart and commented on cowpox.

Jenner found that milkmaids who had previously been infected with the less severe cowpox disease did not contract smallpox. From this observation he developed the use of the serum from pustules of cowpox to immunize against smallpox.

Jenner discovered Small pox vaccine. He talked to milk maids and they said they couldn't get small pox because they all had been exposed to cow pox. Cow pox was similar enough that it caused a mild infection and made their bodies immune to small pox.
So he started giving people cow pox to protect against small pox. Vacca means Cow.
So the word vaccination really means "cow ination"
