Never stretch for a warm up. Never stretch before you exercise, always, and I repeat always stretch after your workout! Your muscles need to be warm before they stretch!
You didn't say what kind of exercise you are talking about. Is it weight training? Is it running? If it's running, walk for about 10 minutes at a good clip. If it's weight training ride the bike for the same amount of time, treadmill, something to get your big muscles moving and your core warmed up. Hope this helps some.....

You shouldn't strech 'cold' muscles. . .you should do some cardio activity that gets your blood pumping to your mucles, making them pliable and ready to take on the workout. March in place, jumping jacks, run, etc.
