Where I live we can only get freeview by installing a satellite dish, I have looked into the cost and it would seem that to take out a deal with Sky is the cheapest way to do it. You can sign up for a year, get your free dish and box, then cancel t the end of the year.
In saying this I do believe, that depending where you live you can buy your equipment and install it yourself.
Contrary to popular myth, not all parts of the UK can access Freeview or Digital, bizarrely the Borders Region of Scotland will be the first television region to be switched to Digital in 2008 and the UK Government have no intention of giving them access to Freeview or Digital without every household having to invest in a Satellite dish, average cost per household £150. Oh, and they still have to buy a Freeview box.

you can buy a satellite system from maplins which is not sky. it will cost about £70 or more depending on the system you choose. with the systems from maplins you can receive up to 4,000 free to view channels from over the world, depending on the satellite your dish is pointing to. also it will be good to buy a remote controlled motor for the dish so you can change to other satellites without going on the roof to do so. http://www.maplin.co.uk

You don't need a dish to recieve freeview, all you need is your existing antenna!
To bypass Sky, well you could just use a Y connector.
