I know in Mahayana and Vajrayana, females are allowed to be ordained, but I heard not in the Theravada tradition. Is it true?

Not entirely. There are no Theravada nun's who can trace their lineage back to the time of the Buddha because all of their organizations were destroyed over the years. However in an uncommon show of unity Some Mahayana Nuns ordained and began a Theravada Monastery for women. So there are some Theravada Nuns running around today. Not all Theravada Buddhists recognize them though.
