I agree with the bulk of the previous answers - buying a slightly used car which is still under warranty will save you thousands and will even put you in a higher-class car. For example, a new Honda Civic will cost you about $18K, while for the same money you can get a 2003 Acura TL-S, a 2004 Acura TL with Navigation or Acura CL, or a 2005 Acura RSX Type S. The same goes for a new Toyota Corolla vs. a slightly used Lexus or a new Nissan Sentra SE vs. a used Infinity G35 Sedan. For the price of a new low-end car you could get its used high-end counterpart. For a great selection of high-end pre-owned cars, please visit http://www.motobidia.com/index.asp

If you can hang onto what you are driving now, save up some more money. You can get a very high quality car as a certified pre-owned vehicle.....just like new. These are under warranty and checked out completely, and as good as a "new" car.
Don't buy new....as soon as you drive it off the lot, it depreciates $5,000.
Don't settle for one of the 2007 models that are very cheap.
Go with quality. Be Patient!

When you say "new", do you mean a brand new car, or a new-to-you car?
I would recommend buying a good 2-3 year old car. Let someone else take the huge depreciation hit, and you're sure to get a great car for less than the $20k you've got saved up.

Not sure what your looking for in a car. We have a 2006 KIA Sorento LX. It has a good warranty. It is comfortable for us all. it's biggest down fall is that gas mileage. it gets around 18 MPG.
Has great rebates. We had a budget but needed a safe, comfortable vehicle to travel from Washington state to Kansas.
another option is keep your eye out for a brand new car from the previous year. My in-laws bought a very nice mini van w/ all the bells and whistles for thousands off the sticker price cause it was a new 2005 still sitting on the lot.

I, personally, hate all these cars but from an unbiased opinion. Research these
Scion TC
Honda Civic
Toyota Corolla Type S
Nissan Sentra SER
Sorry, I don't know anything about American cars.

I would recommend a Saturn. I had an Ion and it was great. No trouble at all. I currently am leasing a Vue and so far no problems, just tipped over the 10k mile mark.

My mom just bought a Scion car and she really likes it. Toyota Corolla's and Honda Civics are good cars that retain their value as well.
