Napoleon wasn't a bug on hygiene. He used a quart per day of France's best perfume to hide the fact.
He liked body odor on others so much that he would have a runner tell Josephine when he was returning to Paris, and that she should not take a bath for at least two weeks before he got home. He was forever reaching inside his shirt to scratch.
