If you had met some of the children i teach you would realise that even at 16 they are incapable of reading anything longer than the back of a cd, and deeper than the Beano. Good idea though.

Many didn't get it the first time around, it may get less understanding in schools now.
But a good book, well it is a "Brave New World" that we live in now.
I don't think the lengh is a problem, more the age from where it comes from (old writing style). I consider it a quick read compared to the 1000 page volumes that contribute to trilogies, that push the boundary of contempory witting.

Surely one lesson of this book is that we should have no respect for a society that tries to indoctrinate its children. Compulsory reading of anything would be ignoring this...

Do you think children today will read a big book like that, not unless it's made into a film.

It's a good book, but it's unrealistic, it's a piece of fiction. It would be better for them to study the former USSR and its failures.

1984 is a book that has one underlying message that is presented over and over again.
Orwell had good ideas, but the man could have witten the story in 5 pages and gotten his message across.

Why? It didn't do much when it was first written and there were many more Dictatorships in the world then than there are now.

It would be bootless as learning to read seems nowadays to be an optional extra.
