He possibly has strep throat. His best buddy in school was out a few days with it last week and now he says his throat is a little sore. He is still eating and drinking and does not have a fever, but the coloring on his tonsils and throat is red. What I have heard is that it is not necessary to take him to a doctor yet unless he gets a fever with it or complains of a really bad sore throat. I would really like to know some opinions because it's going to mean a lot of $$. Thanks .

I would wait a few more days to see if it gets any worse....if you go now and the doctor doesnt see anything and then in a few days your son feels worse you will just have to go back to the doctor again!

As a "registered nurse" bunny should also know that strep can be spread by the one who has it coughing or sneezing in the direction of another child, playing ball after they've wiped their nose on their hands, like all kids do. If he has been exposed to strep throat he would have started to fee bad about 5 days after his exposure to the disease (yes it IS a disease). what the doctor looks for are if the tonsils are swollen and covered with white or yellow spots as well as small red spots on the roof of the mouth. A fever may or may not be present and other symptoms can include a stomach ache and/or headache. If it were my child I'd be in the doctor's office, my child's health is more important than money, strep throat untreated can lead to rheumatic fever or arthritis.

Strep Throat usually comes on suddenly within about 12 hours of the first symptoms. The symptoms is a sore red throat with white patches and a fever. If your child's sore throat gets worst and his fever rises I would definitely take him to the doctor. If he does not develop a fever I would wait and see what happens. No reason to waste you money.

I'm 28, and I have gotten strep a couple times a year since I was a kid. The tell-tale sign for me was always white spots on the throat. Once those show up, you got it for sure. Pay attention to the fever issue, for sure, but I'd just keep checking his throat everyday for white spots. If he rally has strep, nothing will take care of it except for antibiotics, and if you ignore it, he could get a strep infection in his kidneys- I have- NOT FUN.
But you can afford to wait and see at this point before heading to the doc.

i'd keep an eye on it. could be just a sore throat. if it isn't improved, gone, or starts to get white "bumps" in the back of his throat... then i'd take him in to the doctor. in the mean time, having him gargle with salt-water 2-3 x's daily for a couple days will help bring out what is causing the throat irritation, only if there is no strep or other infection.

for strep throat, always go to the dr! if he has a fever or gets a sore throat or gets white junk on his tonsils take him in right away. strep throat is highly contagious and if it is not treated properly and right away can cause other problems. until he gets any signs, have him rinse with a good mouthwash, like listerine to kill any bacteria. i had strep numerous times growing up, its no fun. neither is listerine but its better than strep. if he does get it, make sure he finishes taking all of his antibiotics!

I would wait until something else came up. Redness to the back of the throat just means he has drainage and at this time of the year that is normal. Keep a eye on the lynpnode behind and lower then his ears. If it starts to come up take him in. If he's not showing signs of sickness why spend money to fit something not broken. I'm a mother of 2, been there done that, got the t-shirt!!!

A little sore? I would not go to the doctor just for a sore throat. See if it gets worse and take it from there.

I use to get "Strep" when I was a kid and O.M.G .did it hurt to swallow! I could barely get water through. If he can eat and there is no fever, I doubt it's strep. Just buy some sore throat medication and monitor him for fever...save your monies before going to the doctors office....good luck...hope your kid feels better... ;)

Wait and see. Once he complains it really hurts to swallow or he gets a temperature then get to the doctor. He may just have a sore throat from an oncoming cold
