*Head lice do not come out of the air or from the ground. They are human parasites and have probably been here since the beginning of time. Desiccated (dried up) head lice and their eggs (nits) have been found on the hair and scalps of Egyptian mummies.* yes i know, they actually have a website dedicated to it. BTW, whoever said that headlice come from dirty things, it's simply not true. lice prefer clean heads.

They come from other people who have head lice. It's impossible to tell who started them going around. But make sure to get an anti lice shampoo and to throuroughly launder all bedsheets, hats, tops, etc the infected person has come into contact with. Do not borrow others' hats or clothing during a lice epidemic. Do not try to place blame. Do think about throwing out all combs, brushes, etc and getting new ones.

Are Lice Contagious?

Lice are highly contagious and can spread quickly from person to person, especially in group settings (schools, child-care centers, slumber parties, sports activities, camps, and even playgrounds).

Though they can't fly or jump, these tiny parasites have specially adapted claws that allow them to crawl and cling firmly to hair. They spread mainly through head-to-head contact, but sharing clothing, bed linens, combs, brushes, and hats can also help pass them along. Children and teens are most prone to catching lice because they tend to have close physical contact with each other and often share personal items.

And you may wonder if Fido or Fluffy may be catching the pests and passing them on to your family. But rest assured that pets can't catch head lice and pass them on to people or the other way around.

sadly from people who carry them around either unaware or have lax hygiene. i don't mean unclean just unhelpful at sorting the lil blighters out.
they spread like wild-fire around schools because there's always some parents who R 2 busy/don't care/abusing drugs/alcohol 2 take the time 2 check their childrens hair & sort the problem out. a scum-bag group of parents, with no regard 2 what their child maybe going thru!
well that's what i found when my daughter got them in nursery school.
