I'm visiting San Diego CA and yesterday morning a ticket was placed on my rental car. I was parked on a semi hill for "cramping wheel". I did have the wheel slightly turned but not all the way and the breaks pulled up. I have a NY License and New York doesn't have hills, so I'm not sure if I should fight it. Would someone please let me know if I should appeal? Thanks in advance!

If you can appear without much expense, do it. Just act totally stupid and the judge may feel sorry for you. It works about half the time. The court date will probably be a month away though. Will you still be around?

Really doesn't matter if where you live has hills or not, you are responsible for knowing how to park when you decide to drive in an area that does have hills. And if you think way back to your driver's ed days, I bet they covered it in the classroom.

It's a safety feature, even with the parking brake set, cables can break or the brakes fail, and if they do, they want the vehicle to not run down hill into traffic but to go off the side of the road and stop if there is no curb, or be held in place if there is a curb.

Pay the ticket.

There is a rule of law that states: Ignorance is no excuse under the law. This means that you cannot fight the ticket using the 'I didn't know' defense. You could get a sympathetic judge, but if you lose, you also owe court costs on top of the price of the ticket. Sorry.

never heard of this type of law. is it supposed to keep cars from rolling out into traffic?. are you supposed to keep the wheel straight or turn it to the curb depending on gravity? id fight it, the cop probably wont show up if he has to. if not you may be able to plead ignorance and get by but this will take time and lawyers cost money so paying it may be the easiest way to go depending on how long youll be there

Just pay the ticket. You're not going to win that one.
