Anti-depressants certainly helped me to become more functional in society but they have made me emotionally flat and thats sometimes a real handicap.
It's not really a case of whats the strongest anti-depressant it's more which one is best suited to your needs...

Talk with your doctor, they are the ones that will be able to help you the most. I have taken Paxil on and off again for a few years and I have found it to be helpful. However, it has never gotten rid of my depression. I still deal with depression all the time just not as much. I take 20mg/day of Paxil. A few months ago, I tried Zoloft because of the depression and I wanted to tried a different anti-depressant. I was a walking, talking zombie. My head hurt all day everyday for almost 3 months when I was finally taken off on the pills. I hated them and would never try it again. My husband however was given Zoloft to take when he was stressed out over another medical problem and the meds worked for him. No side affects after the first couple of weeks. Talk to your doctor, they will help find the best anti-depressant for you. Good luck.

I was misdiagnosed for 10 years as being depressed and anxious. It turns out that I'm Bipolar II. Bipolars typically seek medical help when they are depressed and are misdiagnosed as having depression only. If anyone has had 3 or more antidepressant failures, meaning the side effects were too much to deal with or made you feel manic (jumpy, unable to sleep etc) you may be bipolar and require a mood stabilizer (the first one they try you on might be lithium but there are many others. (lithium is famous for weight gain). If you experience periods of anxiety, anger, extreme restlessness, that is hypomania, different from the mania that Bipolar I patients experience
which is far more extreme. Bipolars don't do well on antidepressants alone as it throws them into a manic phase. Mood stabilizers control this. I hope I have been of some help and please don't try to diagnose yourself.

Can't answer to what is strongest but I have suffered from depression most of my life and have been on many different anti depressants. Depending on just what your diagnosis is it will help the doctor determine which one to put you on. My experience has been positive as long as I stay on my medication. When I stop I can get suicidal

Antidepressants should be used as a temporary measure. They are no substitute for dealing with the issues in your life. If you treat the symptoms but ignore the root cause, the problem will go merrily on. Besides, taking too many for too long will lead to none of them being effective. Overuse of some antidepressants can lead to suicidal depression, which is NOT what you want.
I suggest you talk to someone about what's depressing you, see if you can do something constructive to remedy your situation.

anti depressants will help the symptoms but not the cause,Ive been on them for 25 years on and off, the strongest tend to be the sedative ones, but only use them as a last resort.

For me antidepressants didn't help they made me feel worse and then I figured out why. ADD/ADHD. The symptoms can mask themselves as bipolar disorder and can make you depressed. I decided against taking any meds because they have put me on everything to Zoloft to Prozac to Ritalin. I hate drugs controlling my body, so I learned to control it myself. It took me awhile, but I learned to control impulses and from letting myself spiral into a depression. It's not for everyone, but that is my experience.

I liked Zoloft, Effexor, Lexapro.
All effective for my panic attacks. Lexapro is the least effective, Effexor the most. Effexor works on serotonin and norepinephrine while the others are just serotonin.
Effexor is a b*tch to get off of though. Use xanax or ativan with them.

I'm not a doctor so i'm telling you to ask your doctor about CELEXA. it comes in doese from 10mg and up. Depending on what you need and what your symptoms are you can have higher doses. Ask your doctor because it can be very helpful to some people and the side effects are mild.

they are not good. They have a lot of side effects and if you start to use them it is like a drug into your body.Avoid them as much as you can . Go to a doctor and get some advice. If you need to take them according to your doc ,there is a website which can help you more: http://www.healthyplace.com/Communities/depression/treatment/antidepressants/index.asp
