No! these dogs are horrible family dogs:

Personality

The Chihuahua is an active dog. Though not very sociable with other breeds, the Chihuahua seems to be able to recognize other Chihuahuas and enjoys their company. As a devoted family pet, the breed tends to be a little jealous when their owner spends time with other people. Sometimes this jealousy can create problems since the breed can also be jealous of larger dogs.

Home and Family Relations

Due to their small size, the Chihuahua is perfect for the apartment dweller and does well with the elderly. They tend not to do well with children since they do not tolerate rough play.

The Chihuahua is well known as a loving, devoted and loyal family pet. Despite their size, the Chihuahua will alert to strangers but isn't big enough to follow through.

Training

Chihuahuas need to be socialized early in life to prevent behavior problems or aggression. The breed can also be paper-trained, which means the dog never having to leave the house.

Yes, a chihuahua is a good breed and is exceptional with children and other dogs. My family has raised them in the past with Boston Bull terrier's and Dachshunds. However, it will take a little time for your dog to adjust to a new puppy. Your certainly picking a good breed for another family companion. They're very sweet tempered and easy to train. I know this from many years experience. Also, just wanted to mention that make sure your puppy doesn't have parvovirus. It's contagious to other dogs. Our family bought an AKC Chihuahua and it became sick just after 2 days of having her. The symptoms don't show up right away in takes about 4-7 days to incubate. She died within a few days afterwards she had no immune system. So make sure to have a distemper & parvovirus test on your puppy. It's costly yes but much more costly if you don't in the long run. I hope this helps. Good Luck!

Of course! Chihuahuas, in my opinion, are the sweetest dogs ever! We used to have a chihuahua, and she was a teeny-tiny dog with a great big attidude towards anybody that might have been a threat to our family. To chihuahuas, size doesn't matter. She chased away three German shepherds at once, saving my life when I was three! They are very playful and family-oriented. I think that a chihuahua would be a lovely addition to any family including those with young children. I hope you are happy with whatever dog you choose for your family!

Chihuahua's can be very good dogs, but you have to be picky about which one you get.

Sadly like most pure breed dogs, the pure Chihuahua's can be a nightmare. Self centered and pretty much untrainable, many of the pure ones are just plain stupid. Tea-cup Chihuahua's are often fraidy dogs, and are too scared to even be around other people or dogs, and especially children.

Try a mixed breed half chihuahua, and half another 'smarter' dog.
It will still be similar in appearance to what you want, but you can avoid the mental problems associated with the pure bred ones.

NO!
Chihuahua's are not kid dogs. I have one, she is mixed and she can be whinny. They are wonderful pets , my dad's female Chihuahua and she sticks to him like glue because she knows he is deaf.
I've been bit my my friends Chiuhuahua when I was younger. About 6. The like to stick to one person, I've learned that because our Chihuahua Ginger will only stay to my dad and my dad only.
If your kids are 12, 11 or older a Chihuahua could work aslong as you got it as a young puppy. My friend has one named Paco and he the best dog I've ever seen. Friendley, smart, CUTE, so aslong as you don't have young kids, GO GET ONE!
Good luck and hoped this helped!

My chihuahua is wonderfully socialized and gets along fairly well with other dogs, but I often worry about larger dogs treating him like a toy. Kids, he's a little wary of, but if they are very calm and I am holding him, he will tolerate a little petting. I have heard LOTS of horror stories about chihuahuas and kids though. (kids tend to think they are toys and come on too aggressively, which scares them into snapping)
Keep in mind that chihuahuas bond very stongly to one person. That's not to say it won't get along with other people, but its not a "family" breed like labs who love everybody equally.
Also, if you are considering moving anytime soon, a chihuahua isn't for you. They don't adapt as easily to new situations as other breeds.
Keep all of these things in mind before diving in head first: chihuahuas are a wonderful breed: mine is the love of my life, but they aren't for everyone, depending on the situation.

Dogs shouldn't be left alone for more than 6 hours (puppy even less, about 2 hours max), if your grandma or other family members can't take care of the dog for you(feeding, playing and potty break), I wouldn't suggest you to get a dog at the moment. If the dog can be looked after, I would suggest a golden retriever or a Labrador retriever considering the size of your property, they are very energizer and extremely affectionate and friendly(even to children), they can be good lap dogs even thought they are large size breed as they are very loyal and easy to train. Chihuhua likes to bark and it will be too small for your property size and exercise requirements.

A Chihuahua would not be good with your family. They are a very nervous dog, and should not be around children. They should be your only dog.
