Most of you Christians haven’t even really read the bible I’m sure. For you I say, read it and then you have the right to open your mouth. To you others; okay, you can make excuses for the horrors, the pro-killing, rape, slavery, subordination of women, slaying of babies, homosexuals, stoning of people that don’t keep the Sabbath day holy, that fornication, commit adultery, or teenagers that are rebellious? What about destroying and killing whole towns of women and children of sin? Gashing open pregnant women. Why haven’t you launched an attack on all of us non-believers on yahoo answers? Your God wants us dead right? But going by some scriptures, such as a few of the Ten Commandments, he wants you to die also.

However, you escape the act of having to admit to this because the bible has so many conflicting teachings and laws. In some chapters it says kill the unholy, in others say murder is wrong. In some scriptures Jesus says the only way to get to heaven is to behave more righteously than the Pharisees, you must sacrifice animals, in others; it says only to believe in him to get into heaven. Now, what do you follow? According to God himself his word never changes and his laws all remain. His word is perfect and everlasting. So how can you disregard his laws that aren’t so pleasant? How can you justify your own disgust for these atrocities? God’s word doesn’t change so don’t claim this was just the ‘Old testament laws’. God’s word is permanent and everlasting; you cannot claim it is out of date or no longer applicable. Listen to God say so himself:

The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of Lord stands forever.
1 peter 1:24-25

The grass withers; the flower fades; but the word of our God will stand forever.
Isaiah 40-8
Same message twice!!!

Psalm 19; 7 Yahweh's law is perfect, restoring the soul. Yahweh's testimony is sure, making wise the simple.

8 Yahweh's precepts are right, rejoicing the heart. Yahweh's commandment is pure, enlightening the eyes.

9 The fear of Yahweh is clean, enduring forever. Yahweh's ordinances are true, and righteous altogether.

Okay, but then comes along Jesus, with his rules. Now, God, Yahweh is the all mighty, not Jesus. So who’s word would reign if God and Jesus’ laws conflicted? Would you dare to put God’s word last? You make the choice. But just remember blasphemy or idol worshiping of other person but God is punishable by death (even his son). You will be stoned for taking Jesus’ word over God’s. Prepare to take an eternity of burning in hell for your choices; God certainly wasn’t very forgiving to most of the people in the bible. But then again, some of you believe in the trinity, good luck getting coherency and sense out of your beliefs. You can’t just pick and chose what beliefs you want to have, even if they all conflict and don’t make sense, you must believe in them all. No exceptions or excuses. If you are not to be perfect, at least apologize to your God that you don’t have the courage to stone other people or yourself. Or apologize for not sacrificing animals for him. Able did and got God’s approval and love. God wants blood spilled for him, not vegetables. Pray to God to forgive you for having a heart and not following all of his repulsive rules and words.

Don’t tell my you looked at my argument logically and still have no doubt or wonder about the beliefs you claim to posses. You are ignorant and unworthy of a functioning human brain if you think you are undoubtedly right.

Don't ever make it this long on yahoo answers. No one will read all of it from my experience.

Everyone knows the bible is contradictory. But they just see it as interpretation.

It's always about logic. Your arguments are correct. If you say you believe in the old testament you can not possibly agree with the new testament too because it's obviously a lie. Certain "quotes" were mistranslated from Hebrew to "prove" that Jesus would come. Any evidence at all that says Jesus was divine automatically proves he was a false prophet too. Anyone who ever said to disregard or add or change any laws in the old testament is considered a false prophet.. and that's exactly what Jesus did. Plus if you look at history, he was a horrible kid, always making trouble... not exactly god-like. And more so, why is he so special just because he was killed on a cross? Hundreds of people were killed that way, it was a common Roman torture/execution method. And Greek, it's even referred to in Antigone... not exactly biblical age.
If you can't prove or back up your religion, how can you have faith in it? Stop kidding yourself, you'll never be 100% happy until you know with absolute certainty that you religion makes sense and can be proved, both through history and logic. And word to the wise, Jesus himself didn't even start Christianity, his "followers" about a hundred years later did.

It is the nature of belief. Belief is not based on reality or reasoning. You can believe two plus two is five or three. You only need to believe. You are just unwilling to believe. If you believed in the bible you would be able to accept it is true. Even with all the contradictions, because you can claim you don't understand God's word. Suspend reason and you can go along way with belief.

When I read a fiction book, I allow myself to believe what ever the author writes. It is fiction...I am aware I am believing...and when the book is done, I stop believing. Some people keep believing...even when they are done with the book.

Belief and faith are extremely powerful, perhaps more than reason. Promise the believer will go to heaven and watch the believer do a suicide bombing. You won't get someone to do that with reason. With reason, I no longer need to guess... I know. Reason has done more to improve life in the past hundred years than all the time under religion.

Death is easy, living is hard.

You can't, unless you consider the ground rules for reason that Moses established, which consist primarily of the idea of it taking two witnesses (or writiers) to establish a matter. And in cases where there is clear contradiction, there is always something more hidden that resolves the true path in one way or the other.

There are also different times and seasons (Solomon) in which different parts of the Bible have more significance, and when others should not be applied. Preachers have totally destoyed this idea though, by simply picking whatever they want from whereever they want because of whatever reason they want to make the case of their own choosing. This just leaves everybody cofused.

Concerning God and Jesus, most Christians have believed the preachers lies about them being the same for so long that a lot of things in the Bible cannot possibly make sense to them. The key here is to understand that God judges nations, not men, while Jesus presented the ideals of how men should work together.

The laws God gave Moses were (that are now applicable only in principle) for man to govern man. not for God to govern man. When the nation fails God, He sends their enemies against it. That is what is happening to the U.S. today. It is then that the sayings of Jesus carry more weight, which are intended to enable man to learn to work together again to set the nation straight in God's sight.

Concerning the accusations and opinions of Christians in general, I say just take no offense. Nobody in history has ever been led so astray by "professional" clergy than the American Christian is today.

Stir things up and you will get a storm...

Short answer. Jesus said he came to fulfill the law. He told jewish people that they had to be perfect and follow the rules, to please God. He was showing them they aren't. He was. He lived the right life, and took the place of the believing sinner.

As for troubled times. Take a big good look around you. You say that the world is better off without religion? What influences our kids now? Violence is ok....? Hating is ok? Drugs, alcohol abuse is genetic and normal? Whatever you want to believe is ok? And people are shocked that schoolkids are killing, maiming and severely beating each other everyday. 50 years ago, even a non practicing christian would faint, when faced with what we call acceptable, today.

Conflict is in your eyes. You, who does not understand the bible...who He was talking to...where they were and the life they had to face..... spout out what you read at a website, maybe just to reinforce your belief that you can do what you want, without guilt or accountability.

I believe the Bible is the closest thing I've got to a road map for my life. I suffer from a lack of "sense of direction" and I am confused much of the time. I get lost. I don't say I am right for everybody. I just try to be right for me.
Several people have the idea that the reason Atheists are bothered by Believers is that they (Atheists) are itching and they can't ignore it, but must scratch. See C. S.Lewis; Malcolm Muggeridge.. They said it better. I had doubt and I wonder, but not because of your argument. I have a good intellect but, yes I am ignorant. I'll try to do better.

There are no contradictions in the KJV version of the bible and I will defend that. I am one of those incoherent people who believe the trinity and as far as that doctrine is concerned you are right. I will not understand it nor will I be able to explain it. Nevertheless, the word of God tells it to be so therefore I believe it. As far as the contradictions go, there have always been two ways to heaven. You can get there by keeping the 10 commandments, or you can get there through asking God for forgiveness. Jesus and God are one and the same person (refer to comment of trinity) so people in the old testament were justified by trusting God and people today are justifed by trusting in God. Jesus is prophecied as the coming redeemer many times in the o.t. ex. ISA. 53...

As far as all the killing and wars and stuff that have happened shows that God is a jealous and angry God and is to be feared. Contrasted by the grace which he also gives to all people to repent. In other words he gives ample grace and if we still reject him as you are so clearly doing in your comments, judgement will come. It is a constant warning throughout all scripture that judgement is coming and that we need to turn to God for redemption. So consider yourself warned.

If you would like to talk about contradictions and hear my defence on the subject I would be happy to discuss it.

The Bible is extremely profound and complex...yet also with a simple message at its root....

To address your question, it is important to first understand how God forms covenants with His people. And there are different requirements for each covenant, which may or may not be mutually exclusive to one another. For instance, the requirements of the covenant God established with Samson did not apply to other individuals, and do not apply to us today. What is unique about the New Covenant, however, is that through it Jesus came not to abolish the requirements of the Old Covenant but to fulfill them...the revelation of this is quite profound.

For instance, there are many things under the Old Covenant law that require stoning when violated. It is also true that animals were often sacrificed for the “atonement” of sins. In accordance with this principle, Jesus, the “Lamb of God” and mediator of the New Covenant, was put to death to atone for all sins. And so rather than changing the law, Jesus took the punishment for all sins and fulfilled the law. Thus, as there is now no need to stone sinners, Jesus commands us to forgive one another (as He demonstrated in the account from John 8 where the adulterer is brought before Him).

Furthermore, those who followed Judaism at the time accused Jesus of breaking the law by doing work on the Sabbath (when He healed a person). Rather than telling His accusers that the law of the Sabbath was no longer in effect, He responded, “Stop judging on mere appearances, and make a right judgment!” You see, even in that day it was acceptable under the law to work on the Sabbath day in order to save a life….which is what Christ did through this healing. For the real miracle of that healing was that it brought a person to know eternal life. The revelation of Christ teaches us that life is more than flesh and blood. Jesus said, “Unless you are born of both the flesh and the Spirit you shall in no way enter into the kingdom of God.”

Of course, only Christ can lift the veil so that we may understand how God has tied all things together from Genesis to Revelation. For true understanding of the Scriptures is something that is revealed by the Spirit of God as we seek Him from the heart, it is not figured out by the intellect of man. As it is written of Jesus, “44He said to them, "This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms." 45Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures.” (Lk 24:44-45). And as Paul wrote of the Israelites, “…their minds were made dull, for to this day the same veil remains when the old covenant is read. It has not been removed, because only in Christ is it taken away.”

False assumptions always lead to false conclusions. Going to church I am surrounded by people that study and read the Scriptures daily and know them by heart. Your view of believers is self-conceptualized and universalized.

You make further false assumptions that all the above elements in the OT were ordained by God and true for all time for all believers when in fact many of them had their time and place and are done with. If you have read the NT you should know by now that OT law no longer applies to us. That was for ancient Jews, not us. There is a pattern of universal truth running through the OT where you can see that things like murder, stealing, and sexual immorality are clearly universally eternally wrong. One does not have to be a Bible scholar to distinguish the diference.

Its true God did order Israel to go in and sanitize the promised land including women and children and as youll note from your reading that they didnt do it fully and those people became a huge problem for them in many ways. This is going to be representative of how God deals with the evil people of the world. And God knows whether a baby is going to grow up and be his follower and love him. If God decides that people from an evil civilization must die, so be it. The wages of sin is death.

While the word of the Lord is infallible, you continue to make the false assumption that what God says is always universal. Many things God has told us was conditional or provisional. When your mom gives you a band-aid, is it forever? We see this with things like divorce. God gave them a provisional law for divorce in order that society would continue to function in spite of the evil of men. But later, Jesus came along and told us how it really was when mankind was ready to hear it. That is the nature of Gods revelation sometimes; that it is provisional and based on the needs of mankind as well as Gods will.

You make a further false assumption that Jesus is not 1 with the Father and he himself God. That allows you to come up with scenarios where Jesus and the Father can possibly conflict and we really dont see that at all in the Scriptures. What we do see is mankind conflicting with Gods will seemingly at every turn.

The Bible neither contradicts in theology or history. When reading the Bible youre going to come across many things that SEEM contradictory but with greater understanding, a light bulb turns on inside. Bear in mind it was produced by more than 40 authors from various times and places. It does take a lot of prayer, and the Holy Spirit to understand; 2 things an unbeliever arent able to utilize to help them.

Btw, I didnt believe the Bible simply because I read it, I believed the Bible because I was at a point in my life where I was ready to start believing what God was trying to teach me!
