Whenever i have a file that has a AVI file in it, explorer crashes. A Error report comes up, i click dont send, it crashes and in 2 seconds everything is back to normal. I have the latest DivX update, and SP2. I have looked at many forums and still have no clue. Anyone have a suggestion on how to fix this.

What program are you trying to open the .avi with? It must be a media player that supports the .avi file type, and have the codec installed.(If you are trying to play it} I would recommend video lan (VLC). It will open about anything out there.

What you are describing is a flaw in the Windows operating system. When opening to a folder with an .avi file, Windows will automatically start a preview of the .avi file. Unfortunately, it can easily crash Windows. The solution is to turn off this feature. First, create a system restore point if things go wrong. You will need to use Windows registry editor. Go to Start Menu > Run > enter "regedit" > [O.K.] > find the following key

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/SystemFileAssociations/.avi/shellex/PropertyHandler/

On the right panel, right click (Default) > [Modify] > change the value to 0 > [O.K.] > File > Exit > Reboot

If you are not too comfortable with editing the registry, there is another way but it involves installing a freeware utility, Acelogix's Tweak N' Tune. You can read the instructions for downloading and using this at: http://winston-blog.blogspot.com/2006/10/safe-and-easy-way-to-boost-windows.html

Your video might be affected from a virus... Run a scan and see...
If it's not caused by a virus run windows in safe mode...
In order to do that restart your computer and press F8 just after the bios screen has been disappear... Now in the menu thas appear press enter on the option "Safe mode".. When you reach the log-on screen of windows enter on the admin's account and play the video...
If the video is played you simply have to check windows settings if it's not played you will have to re-install the video codecs....
I suggest you to use k-lite codec pack... I think that they are the best
(i use them 4 years and have no problems)

I have the same problem too. usually i uninstall all my codecs, video player using their uninstall application first. (add or remove program) and i meant ALL of it even the windows media player if its found on the ad or remove programs. Restart.

Install one player or codec only, dont mix all codecs only to play your movie, it could crash some of the other video application using a codecs.

You can try installing k-lite codec packs, its has lots of codecs in it with a single setup only. it runs almost all movies.

I had the same problem. I had a bunch of old codecs installed. I removed all my codec's and reinstalled and everything seems to work now.
