they will try to vocalize right away, the more you repeat the same words and phrases to them the sooner their vocalizations will resemble human speech.

Greys are very good at being 'The Rat' meaning they will rat you out in a heartbeat but if you want to get your pet talking and telling you what to do all the time. Watch your bird closely as they have a receptive time and a non-receptive time. This means that if you are teaching when it is not ready you just as well be skiing or bowling. No fear, they are generally receptive several times through out the day. If you have a radio on and your birds begins to pay attention to it and make sounds. TURN IT OFF along with any other noise makers IE TV other media. Now is a good time to work with your pet. spend only 15 to 20 and if nothing happens don't be alarmed, trust me you will see results at the most amazing times.

On average, most greys start talking at 12-18 months of age. Of course, some start earlier or later. My grey said, "Hi" and "Hello" at about 7 months. After he reached 12 months the floodgates opened and he hasn't stopped talking or learning new words since. There are also some greys who never learn to talk.

As a general trend, african greys will start talking by about 2 years of age. Sometimes they start trying to speak at a few months old. Sometimes they don't ever talk.
If you want to encourage your AG to talk, repeat certain phrases to her. Like when you put her to bed at night, tell her "good night (name)!" and when you wake her up in the morning, tell her "good morning (name)!". When you feed her something or eat something yourself, say "MMMM good!"
It's all about what you say to the bird and how often you repeat it. Birds tend to be able to pick up higher tones voices than the deeper tones. Speak clearly to your bird so that when it starts speaking, you will understand her. When she says her first word, go NUTS! Praise her, dance around, laugh, be a nutcase. The more she sees that her speaking makes you happy, the more she will speak for you. Good luck!

They will start to talk as early as 2-3 months and are usually talking by 3 years old, but they will only start to talk if they hear a word or words that they find interesting.

You don't say if it is hand raised or a breeding rescue or...? I agree it can start anytime but It is best if the bird feels a bond w/ their person and actually likes him/her...Birds talk because it is a game (fun) for them they repeat sounds they like or are fascinated with >My African Gray "flushes' like the toilet barks and calls my dogs! he also learned a word I 'd rather not hear him say...from me (in a snit) and he often says it when i am on the phone...lovely...If you do a certain activity when you say a certain phrase or word ...they can learn it faster...I always sing "Oh what a beautiful morning" when I uncover him and I sing " goodnight goodnight sleep well and when you dream...dream of meee" ( from West Side Story) it took him 3 years but he does it w/o fail I love this also...he says Ov waaaa(sp) when I walk away 'cause I only say it then and I always say it then . They are very smart and need attention... and to feel loved and secure...mine says several sentences and sings speaks Japanese and Spanish! he sings 2 lines from Opera ...La Donna Mobeley...Gr8 fun...If you BOTH are to be happy... you must exhibit gr8 PATIENCE!....OH! don't say HER name...say your name! goodmorning YOUR name...SO it seems she is talking to you... not mindlessly blathering...

About 2 or 3 years old, but most birds that talk are only the male birds of any breed.

Has soon as she hears sounds or words that she wants to repeat. Be careful with what you say. Because sometimes having a talking bird with get you into trouble. Sometime having a talking bird is not all that is cracked up to be.
Good luck!

I don't think they have to be any age to learn how to talk. Just start talking to them when they are young and they'll catch on.
