I'm not sure what it has to do with God but fingerprints exist to make it easier to grip things whether its Human or ape.

The image of God is more a matter of our souls, not necessarily our physical characteristics. Mankind is unique from animals in that we have things like developed societies, history, culture, art, justice, morality, technology, science, philosophy, transcendence of environment, a sense of self-awareness, and most importantly; religion and knowledge of God.

Apes are just a side line. God was just experimenting on how to make man into a better tree climber and since it was a man prototype it naturally had many similar features.

I have a couple of question for your question.
How many people lived to be near 1000 years old?
Where apes mentioned in the bible?
God is perfect and if man was created in his image his first day would be a 1000 year day. 2Pet.3:8;
Before the flood and after all souls were born in sin, while the earth was life sustaining those people still lived near to a 1000 year day.
Adam 930, Jared 962, Methusaleh 969 and died in flood year, Noah 600 before the flood and 350 after the flood, he was born in year 1056. Adam had been dead 126 years.
After the flood and the life sustaining earth was lost, the age Gen.6:3 of man down to Moses and King David Psm.90:10 [onto now ], dropped fast.
But the son of Noah that came through the flood and had 502 years of life left, died 25 years before Abraham died. Abraham who was age 150 years old when Shem died, died 25 yeas later.
THESE PEOPLE HAD QUITE A RECORD, BUT THEY HAD LOST ANYTHING THAT NEAR RESEMBLED BEING IN GOD'S IMAGE AFTER SIN. Luke 20:34-36 Angels do not die.
Man must be SAVED from death to eternal life to be back in God's image, no sin and life.

God created man in his own image, and he also created apes (with fingerprints). Not sure I'm following your logic here.

I think here we can take 'own image' as the ability to discern wrong from right, have a conscience, feel intense and complex emotions etc. not what we actually look like as humans have a wide variety of different features.

Cats each have a unique pawprint too. Apes, humans, and cats all have legs, a spine, ears, eyes, noses, . . . . .I don't think "created in God's image" refers to a physical form.
