The "Forbidden City" of Beijing. Yeah... Beijing, the capital of People's Republic of China. Long long time ago, it was "Peking" then became "Beiping", and later changed to its present name "Beijing". Literally, it's meaning is "North City" or "Northern Capital". I think some of the cities in China came from some literal meanings, like Shanghai, it means "On The Sea". That's all!
More Info: You know Tokyo, right, in Japan? In Japanese, "Tokyo" means "East City" or "Eastern Capital" while in China, "Beijing" means "North City" or "Northern Capital". You can see the similarity in their characters as Tokyo is in Chinese character. You can see the "jing" in Beijing and "kyo" in Tokyo being similar in their words.
Good luck!!

Beijing a city in northern China, is the capital of the People's Republic of China (PRC). It was formerly known in English as Peking or Peiking [English Pronunciation]. Beijing is also one of the four municipalities of the PRC, which are equivalent to provinces in China's administrative structure. Beijing Municipality borders Hebei Province to the north, west, south, and for a small section in the east, and Tianjin Municipality to the southeast.
