The UK government has set a target of 70% of all adults to be involved in organised sport 5 times a week by 2010.When exactly are we supposed to look after/care/support our families?what about the arts? This has got to be the best example of government stupidity EVER.I enjoy sport, but hate sportsmen/women with their self obsessed better, faster, longer ,winning is important ,attitude. What are we ,Spartans?

What activity takes takes jst 30 minutes? It takes at least an hour to travel, change each side of the 30 minutes of activity.Either you get up at 6.00 am or your children are in bed when you come home.Either way its a sure way to divorce and an early grave. Most people work 8-6, only a lucky few have the opportunity to excercise during this period.
Maybe what we really need is a target to be paid more so we can work less to fit everything in.

That's because the Government wants none of the people with enough free time or energy to fu ck each other,as the Government sees that as its role.

When 70% of MPs have been involved in sport 5 times a week for at least a month, I might consider it.
But only when I've seen what they deem to be 'involved in'.
However laughing uncontrollably at government targets is probably a sport so there really shouldn't be much of problem.

first of all can i just say something about your point about the arts, im not trying to be funny coz i know nothing about art and what people get out of it, but people are being encouraged to do sport because as a nation we are becoming more and more obese and sport is the best way to counteract this, we cant claim to get healthier by appreciating art, (although i understand it may bring enjoyment to many people)
Any way, now that ive said my piece about that, onto your actual question. i do indeed think it is ridiculous to have 70% of adults involved in ORGANISED sport, there just isnt enough time in the week, however i do think it is realistic to have 70% of adults involved in some kind of exercise 5times a week, and by exercise i just mean something like a brisk walk, im sure you have heard people banging on about getting off the bus a stop early or walking to work if possible etc but it is simple and it does reap benefits, im sure if the goverment focused on this and not ORGANISED sport they would go a long way to meet their target and we would become a healthier nation.
One more thing, yes it is right to be getting the adults involved and healthier but we really need to stop the rot and get the kids involved from an early age, too many sit inside all the time on computers and never do exercise, i studied sport at uni and focussed on kids for my dissertation and you would not believe the statistics of obese children and those who did no exercise a week, not even joining in with P.E at school, and part of this was to do with waht you picked up on - the need for everyone to be better or faster and to win all the time, it leaves the less talented behind and not wanting to join in
I think the goverment needs a slight rethink on what its doing about exercise, although they are going in the right direction - at least they are doing something about it
Again sorry to shoot you down on the arts thing

Considering that the male side of the population think that involvement in sport consists of watching MU getting beaten on a Saturday and the other half of the population considers dreaming of walking down a catwalk as sporting participation you are probably round about right in saying that about 90 percent are sporting participants and the rest are over seventy seven ----- Yeah it all sounds realistic

Is the government mandating that people HAVE TO play sports or simply encouraging it as a worthwhile goal? I'm not sure about the situation in the UK, but here in the USA obesity is reaching pandemic proportions. 60 % of Americans are obese and the problem is becoming exponentially worse every year. The cost to employers, insurance companies and the healthcare system is staggering due to the results of diabetes, heart disease, back pain, lost work, etc.
If you have time for the arts, your family, etc. certainly you have time to invest in your physical health. I think investing 30-60 minutes 5 times a week into your health is not only reasonable but absolutely necessary. We all find time for the necessary things in life, especially if we enjoy the activity, and exercise should be at the top of the list. Your argument is flawed- why do you think you have to choose between family and the arts OR exercising regularly? Are you saying a person cannot do both? Is every athlete automatically
"self-obsessed" because they are focused? Sounds like the reasoning of someone who lacks discipline and the desire to commit to regular exercise/proper diet and is jealous or uncomfortable with someone who is able to do that very thing. I wonder how you would react if someone labeled you as "self-obsessed" or a Spartan because you thought providing for your family, enjoying the arts or spending adequate time with your children was an important aspect of life?
Maybe your govenment sees the writing on the wall and wants to avoid the health catastrophe sure to come if it doesn't step in and somehow guide people in the right direction.

What is organised sport supposed to be exactly? I work out reguarly, but I'm not joining no gym or athletics club, I'll do my own thing thanks. Here's two fingers to the government! As for the fact that most MP's probably have childminders to look after their children and maids to do the housework, they probably have no concept of time management! HTH.

I have to admit that I find both the Arizona Law and the boycotts of it ridiculous. If a professional sport team were to join in the boycott, it would be even sillier. I find it hard to believe that there is any reliable measure of how most Americans feel about the law itself.

I agree with you. Their goal should be promoting a healthy lifestyle and daily exercise. Not necessarily organized sports....
