Diwali , it's a short form of 'Dipawali'
means, row or line of diyas,
and it's said that,
Ram killed Ravan and after 14 yrs.,
he returned at Ayodhya with Sita ,
so to welcome them, people of
Ayodhya enlighten so many lamps and
thus started this festival.
and also in Karatak starts hindu new year,
so we also celebrate both together.
some people also say,
it's a victory of Krishna over Narakasur.
anyway,
it's a festival of lights , victory over darkness,
outer as well as inner.

The world Diwali is the corruption of the world Deepavali. Mean Festival of lights. There are many stories surrounding this festival, each is right according to its situation and time. Its can be seen as victory of good over evil. Darkness has always associated with evil forces and they are afraid of light. Light brings clarity and we can see things clearly. When we see things clearly we act wisely. It does not require a scripture to support it. Diwali is also a festival of joy, of plenty and of richness. A society which is poor in spirit cannot appreciate a festival like diwali, holi, baisakhi, onam, pongal, janmashtami.
one may come across many instances where diwali is related to hindu mythology. Victory of Lord Ram over Ravan, Krishna's victory over Narakasura, Kali's killing of Mahishasura etc. Good is always seen as lights and darkness is equated with evil. Ravan, narkasura, mahishasura are bad characters. with thier end, its again good times. so people need an occassion to celebrate. just look at hindu homes during diwali. the whole house is decorated with earthern lamps. ther will be a pooja for well being of the house hold members and for prosperity. then all the members of the house hold join fireworks. its an occassion to meet and celebrate.

Diwali or better known as deepavali ( which means a string of lights)is a legendary festival going back to Lord Krishnah's time about 5000 years ago. The old story (Purana ) is that there was a dark demon known a narkasur who was slain by Krishna's wife satyabhama. Before his death the demon is reported to have asked the lord a boon that his death should be celebrated with lighting of lamps and exchanging sweets and blessings. The boon was granted and deepavali started. The cracker has come very late in diwali. On this occasion Godess lakshmiis also worshipped. Many communities have the custom of opening the new ledgers on this day.merchants test their forth coming years luck by betting oncard games and the belief is winner will have a prosperous year and looser will loose as such he shoul avoid new investments,Historically these things cannot be verified a History itself is a new subject and most of the older portions written on guess work and not based on evidence.

Diwali is celebrated to mark the triumph of good over evil. The evil demon Naraka was killed by Satyabhama ,God Krishna's consort on this day.The celebrations are marked by burning fire crackers etc.
It has a scientific reason also.the festival normally falls during October by which time the rainy season is over.As a result of the rains and stagnation of water in pools mosquitoes and other creatures are generated. The fire crackers etc used in celebration generate smoke and sound which destroys these creatures.
Diwali also denotes the beginning of new Year for some of the business communities amongst Hindus.Goddess Laxmi who gives wealth ,is worshipped .
Thus it is a festival of lights and sounds celebrated to take care of our wealth and health.

Deepawali, the festival of lights celebrates the victory of good over evil. There are numerous instances of epic battles, wherein the virtous triumphed over the bad, but famously, Diwali is the day on which Lord Rama returned to his kingdom Ayodhya after 14 years of exile, having slayed a large number of demons including RAVANA, the biggest of them all.
As the story goes, Rama was an incarnation of Lord Vishnu (The preserver in the trinity), who was exiled due to the machinations of his stepmother for 14 years. While in exile, his wife Sita was abducted by the lord of demons, Ravana, who was the ruler of Lanka. Rama, along with an army of his followers including monkeys, attacked lanka and killed Ravana, rescued Sita. Having done that, the day he returned to his kingdom, the whole city was lit up to welcome him. Diwali is celebrated to commemorate this.

why do we celebrate festivals ? to enjoy with our friends & relatives & to spread good will .but of course we have mythological significance for each and every festivals. .diwali is celebrated to welcome rama after his victory over ravana. that is victory of good over evil.diwali is celebrated because the demon naraka was killed by krishna on this day. diwali is celebrated to welcome bali chakravarthi to this earth. bali visits this earth once a year on diwali day . he was a very able, kind & good king. so, we decorate our houses with lights & light crackers to show our happiness.these are all beliefs. but don't u think diwali is the most beautiful & enjoyable festivals of hindus ?hindus are nature worshippers. , they do have many gods because they see god in each & every creation of god.why only monkeys? they worship even plants, rivers , mountains & rain.that religion is really very ancient & great.their religion has become the way of life for hindus.

WE celebrate diwali coz on this very day centuries ago ,prince sri ram , completed his vanvaas{his exile from his kingdom}and returned home to his family with sita.
the people of ayodhya were overjoyed to see him after 14 long years and to give him a bright welcome him they lit diyas outside their homes.
to this day indians celebrate diwali to share that joy;)
diwali is also a celabration of triumph of good over evil.
