I have pretty much eliminated the neutral safety swith as the problem. I just tried it ... started the first time. Let run for 2 minutes .... would not start .... placed in neutral .... still does not start! Rocked jeep back and forth while in part ... no luck. After leaving the car sit for awhile, it will start.

the nss is pretty cheap, and easy to replace. it would make sense that yours would go around now. i replaced mine 2 years ago on a 94 cherokee. they tend to be sporadic when they are wearing thin. it's just metal contacts that brush each other in different gears. another possibility is your starter (lower passenger side, near tranny) try giving it a couple light cracks with a hammer or pole (not too hard) this method works for awhile, but soon it would be time for a new starter (chances are you should get a new one anyway, re-cored ones aren't that pricy). hope this helps.

I have a 96 cherokee did u hear about the catalic converter recall?? I got a letter awhile back on it it supposedly rattles and the dealer will repair it or replace it free of charge also if it is hard to start it might be that you are using pennzoil in your motor and it tears up your valves bad or gums them up it did for us. I recommend Valvoline also it could be the fuel filter. We had that too but other than that it is good. We had problems starting ours and had to have this maintenance done to fix it. The ignition switch also was replaced too because it couldnt start or I had to play with it and try numerous times. this may be the root of your problem. I know GP Sorensen makes the part and it is a rough estimate of about $30-40 the ignition is fine now.

Hope this Helps You from Jeep owner to Jeep owner..

My guess would be the problem has to do with the remote starter. If not installed properly and even sometimes if it is installed right it tends to go haywire on the system. First thing I would check is all splices made into the ignition system odds are one of the splices have came loose. Also if it starts fine with the remote and not with the ignition it isn't the starter as it works fine with the remote.

if it starts when you leave it sit a while, but wont crank when you shut it off and ty to start it. it might be the starter not wanting to work when it gets hot. buy one from a chain auto store like advance or pep boys. put their starter in, run it, if it starts back up problem fixed, if not clean it up and return it, tell them you had a broken wire on yours. that should get you the refund. good luck.
