I've never been told that they disappear just like the rest of your question. If you trap in a shallow pond/lake, they don't disappear, they just die from winter kill. We stock our minnow pond every spring.

i got a better one for you...two things, we used to use an old bathtub with water running in it...and we caught minnows all summer and kept the tub full...if it ran out we went to our local pond and cut a 1x1 hole in the ice. lowered in a bait trap with bread crumbs, came back in a few hours and viola, there was usually enough minnows for what we needed for fishing...there are many ways, but unless you have a brook that runs all year long and stays open for minnow catching, id try the above..

i like all of the ideas, and here is another. find an old chest freezer and hook up a pump in it . i use to keep all sorts of bait in one. anything from crayfish and minnows to insect larvae, frogs and tadpoles.
