I have a friend who can't speak english and im asking this question for her. She has a 4 month old pug that is having trouble with breathing. The puppy is breathing through his mouth and makes a hahaha sound. The puppy's tongue turned blue this morning but its back to normal now. The puppy hasn't sleep at all the whole day and wont lie down. he can only sit or stand. She check the inside of his nose and it seems to be closed off. Does anyone know what the problem is? Is this serious? She did take the puppy to the vet but the vet just gave the puppy a shot and sent the puppy home and told her not to get the puppy excited. Her puppy has never left the house cause he isnt vaccinated yet. He leaves only for going to the vet and he is carried and never allowed to walk, stand or sit anywhere except on her lap. the puppy seems like he wont make it through the night. is there anything else she can do? btw, she lives in a 3rd world country so no 24hr vet or animal hospital services

when i said the puppy is never allowed to walk, stand or sit anywhere but her lap, i mean outside the house. the puppy roams freely inside the house because it is clean and free of potential viruses. And i dont think the puppy is fine. the way he is breathing is not normal? his tongue is turning blue. he isnt usually like this. He can't even lay down or sit properly without having trouble breathing. he hasnt slept the whole day. there was a couple of times when it seems like he is about to faint. maybe he is too tired and was about to fall asleep. i dont know. but it doesnt look good.

First of all she needs to let the puppy get some exersize and quit holding him so much, he also needs some fresh air. Having a dog and not letting it stand or walk is just wrong. To answer the first question, Pugs are notorious for having breathing difficulties, they always sound stuffed up,its the way their faces are built, I have a Pug years ago and he always breathed like that and he snored when he slept, which is really cute. This is just the way Pugs are but, they do need to run around to exersize for health reasons and for his happiness.

PLEASE TAKE THIS DOG TO A VET! Pugs sometimes are born with nostrils so small that they cannot get enough air through them. There is a very simple surgery that can open up the nostrils for pugs to breathe easier. If this dog has had its tongue to turn purple, there is an obvious circulation problem that needs to be fixed immediately. She is doing the right thing currently by keeping the puppy close by. It needs to be watched continiously until the nostrils are opened. Do not allow it to run around and get overheated because breathing will become a problem. Hope this helps!

I would try another vet that would give more information to me that just giving my dog a shot and telling me not to get it upset.
The dog has very small nostrils to begin with and could have several problems. The one I would worry about would be heart problems. It is not normal for their tongue to turn blue. Find a competent vet !

It sounds serious. If possible I would see another vet, because the one she went to sounds as though he doesn't have a clue. The dogs tongue turning blue is BAD their tongues should be pink. A dogs tongue turning blue is a sign that not enough oxygen is getting to their brain, so this is a really serious problem. If you know of another vet please urge your friend to see them immediately, this little dog needs urgent attention.

Good Luck,.

Pugs have short snouts and this makes them VERY prone to respiratiory problems.

I wish I could give you more helpful information on what you could do for the pup but that is a wee bit out of my league.

I wish you and your friend the best of luck.
