Oh, Great One, it seems that you have forgotten your catechisms. Remember that the priest is ONLY an instrument, it is God who forgives, not the priest. When we confess our sins, we are confessing to God Himself, and it is God Himself who forgives. Rmember that the priest says at the end of the confession: "go in peace. The Lord has forgiven your sins"

You want logic from a stupid religion? Okay, I will give you logic: Create a religion in which people can sin all day and all night and then go "confess" it and be resolved of all responsibility by a priest who may well be molesting that cute altar boy you always see standing there with his comehither stare that creeps you out. The sinner then gives big to the church for this easy way out and guarantee that heaven is awaiting. Logically, it all makes sense if you want people to give you money.

Being able to vent your feelings is important for mental health. I am an atheist, and know there is no personal God, but the Protestants have also figured out the importance of people being able to forgive themselves: through counseling, through Confession, through having another human being to hear their feelings of guilt and contrition.
It is a wonderful device, and great as substitutes , since God has no hands, no ears but our own.
The concept of a personal God was made up because human beings need the thought of a life after this one so badly, need to feel like we're not here alone in this earth (which of course, we are).

You cannot get "forgiven" from a human who has never been given the right to forgive. The only way to have your sins forgiven is to go to Jesus Christ and believe in your heart that He made the perfect sacrifice by dying on the cross so that you wouldn't have to pay for your sins and then ask Him to forgive you of all of your sins and only He can and will forgive them of you and they will be as far away as the east is from the west. He is the only One because is God. People sometimes get confused with Jesus but it is rather simple He took on human form to be one of us. He was fully God and fully human. That way He could be a "perfect" human and make the sacrifice with all of the sins of the world on His shoulders instead of us having to go to hell created for Satan and the demons because we chose to disregard God and sin.

i think it was something that the church made up to give more power to the priests, cardinals, church ,,,as most of us know none of these religious deities are any better then you or me ,,,they are human and have failings and just as much sin as we do ,but because people are so foolish and can not seem to think for them selves they feel the need to be forgiven by these supposedly self made holy men .......it is to keep people in their church and promotes a healthy membership .
one must forgive themselves and learn from their sins "errors "i call them .
to me having a slate wiped clean is between me and the higher power/God whatever it is you believe ,some white man with a robe on doesn't cut it for me ....i feel it makes people less accountable if they think they can be forgiven simply by "telling"confessing there errors .

Great question. False religion teaches these things, but the Word of God (the Bible) is very clear on man's forgiveness.

The Bible says in I Timothy 2:5 "For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;"

No man can forgive our sins our bring us into a right relationship with God. Men can be used of God to point us towards Christ (thus preachers), but no man can forgive sins on God's behalf.

Jesus Christ died on the cross of Calvary many years ago as a sacrfice for our sin. There he paid for your sin and for my sin.
We must turn to Him in faith, asking for His mercy and forgiveness ... and God will forgive us (see I John 1:9, Romans 10:13, John 3:16).

I totally agree with you. I do know how this practice is justified, as I wondered this same thing myself.

I think it is justified by this scripture:

Confess [your] faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed, James 5:16

I feel like I can speak directly to God, I do not need a middle man. I feel like the Catholic church thought the average man could not possibly know how to talk to God on his own, so a priest was needed to help them talk to God. Did you know that the Catholic church did not allow anyone to have bibles for centuries? The people's knowledge of God and Christ HAD to come from the priest. Amazing.

I am so glad I do not have to rely on someone else to interpret the Word of God for me, or speak to God on my behalf. in Christ, Tab

And yet u unintentionally point out another wrong of the Catholic Church. Logic? ~~~ from a Catholic ~ not likely. Their dogmas are more manmade & self righteous than God made.

I was born and raised catholic until I realized that all religion is just social control. I actually pity anyone who does not question all of the contradictions and falsehoods.
