Imparfait is used for an action that has lasted for a while in the past or for a past customary act. Example:
1. I was very naughty when i was younger.
french: J'etais tres mechant quand j'etais plus jeune.(imparfait)

2. I was very naughty this morning.
french: J'ai ete tres mechant ce matin ( Passe compose)

Imparfait is used when something was going on when something happened. ex: Someone phoned when I was eating. "I was eating" would be in imparfait because it was interrupted. Hope this helps.
