Ramadan lasts 29 or 30 days depending on the sighting of the new moon.
During Ramadan the muslim fasts (abstaining from food, drink, sexual relations) from before sunrise to sunset.
The Islamic calendar consists of twelve lunar months, each lasting 29 or 30 days. Ramadan is the 9th month in the Islamic year.
I think when you say 40 days, you may be confusing this with the Christian practice of Lent, which was originally fasting as done by the muslims but now has been reduced by christians to giving up only one type of food, sometimes chocolate!

its a full lunar month, which is either 29 or 30 days depending on the new moon.
this year its 30, today (Sunday) is the 30th (last) one so tomorrow will be the celebration to mark the end of fasting which is called Eid-ul-Fitr.
