If you are interested in Horse Racing as a sport then shouldn't you be the one in the saddle?

I think ursaitaliano70's answer is probably the best angle. As a kid in Ireland I used to ride racehorses for pocket money, best job I ever had! I do know the 'Sport' never met a King at the races though.

Didn't mean anything derogatory, maybe the question should be........ Where is the line between spectator and sport, can a spectator be classed as a sports person?

Maybe I'm reading between the lines, but I sincerely hope that you don't mean this question in a derogatory sense. If I follow your anology ,are you saying that people who like auto racing should race their personal cars on the freeway also?
Not sure if I could really define a "sport," but horseracing belongs here with the rest of them; motorcycle, boat, snowmobile racing, ETC....
People who know little about horseracing do not appreciate the perils of the sport. A 102 pound jockey , on top of a 1/2 ton animal, balancing on the balls of his (or her) feet , accelerates out of a starting gate faster than your 1973 Ford Falcon, and navigates that animal through traffic, deserves some admiration, and is a true athlete. Of course horse racing is a sport.

Yes, I believe it is a sport. It does envolve physical fitness, not only for the horse but for the jockey. Just ask any jockey and they'll tell you. I was reading something about a local jockey and he's something like, 4% body fat (more or less). Those guys have to be very strong, because they're balancing on an animal moving 30 mph, going around turns, sometimes over jumps.

So yes, I think horseracing can be described as a sport.

SPORT OF KINGS AMEN Yes horse racing is a sport not only a sport but it has been one longer than almost any other sport, ever since man first got on a horse until modern day racing, man (woman too)have raced horses to see whose was the best.every time a jockey gets on the back of a racing horse his life is at stake he does not have any safety devices built in does not have special clothes for protecton, his weigh is to important.he has to be strong, athletic, make quick decisions and know exactly the right time to make them. The horse is a marvel in its self not only (type of racing) do they run fast, some jump hurdles, hedges or water obstacles, others pull carts with drivers(harness).A horse must be in perfect shape in racing or he does not race.A vet is always on hand to make sure if he sees anything wrong the horse does not race.Watch a few races and you can not help but see the SPORT OF KINGS is truly a sport of horse and man working together to do their best in a very demanding and dangerous sport.Look at last years Kentucky Derby winner if don't believe me.

Yes personally, I think it is a sport. Okay, it is a sport. Horses are soo cute!!! lol. It is using a lot of strength not only for the horese, but also for the rider. Its not easy balancing on a horse for one, and you dont just sit on a horse while it runs its self out. Theres the two point position and you stay in it and you have to turn with your horse while it goes around turns, and sometimes jumps.

theres alot of people inerested in football as a sport-- theres 22 players on a pitch, plenty of people watching on a sofa, can't kick a ball to save there lifes. in a horse race there are a handfull of jockeys riding horses, plenty of people watching on a sofa, can't ride a horse to save there lives.
i reckon its a sport- its unusual to hear your reasoning on why its not a sport. usually people point out the horses are doing all the work.

The horse is one of the best athlete in the world, you couldn't for example just take any horse and make it go around a mile at 40 mph. In the saddle, does it mean I could go in a Formula One car.
